My “somewhat different” craft project from yesterday

Yesterday I did something I had never done before…the straggly bits on my middle child’s head just looked absolutely terrible 🫣 - frayed, shoulder-length hair that she’d let a friend cut a few days ago 😱
I ordered two pairs of hairdressing scissors from a major online retailer with “delivery by 7 p.m.”…
My daughter agreed, got to sit in the bathtub on the little one’s small chair, and then I set to work on her hair…sprayed it, combed it, added a little more water, combed it again…and then bravely made the first cut.
Fifteen minutes later, we blow-dried her hair, I trimmed a few more unruly little hairs…
and I have to say, I’m actually a little proud 😁
Of course, it’s not perfect, but my kids have had much worse haircuts from trained professionals at an expensive salon…(which then had to be rescued by other professionals…)

Do you cut your children’s hair yourselves, or have you done so before?

Best wishes

Nina

(tomorrow it’s the little one’s turn 😁 - today she has a playdate)

I’ve been trimming the ends of Lisa’s and my own hair myself for years.
We do have pretty long hair, though.

I’ve started cutting my own bangs and trims now, too—my hair’s long enough. And I cut my husband’s hair. At first, I did end up cutting one spot way too short—it grows back fast, though—but now it always turns out presentable.

Nina, that looks great! You can really be proud. It’s your first time, and it turned out so well right away. Your daughter will walk around all proud and tell everyone that her mom cut it. Then all her friends will come to you... :-)

I used to cut my kids’ hair myself, too. But it’s easier with boys. That’s why I’m great at cutting boys’ hair. And today I still cut my husband’s and my brother’s hair regularly.

Best regards, Ina

That’s a great cut, and you did a really good job with it.
I’ve been cutting my own hair for years now, and after the first few *mistakes*, it kept getting better—you get a feel for where to trim and how much to take off.

Best, Inge

I trim our ends every now and then—my hair is waist-length, sometimes a little longer; my husband’s goes down to just below his shoulder blades; we don’t have kids. I also dye my hair sometimes (turquoise-green), but I keep realizing I don’t catch every strand. If I had lighter hair or wanted to bleach it, I’d probably go to a professional or just skip it altogether.

Nina, you did a really good job, and I think it’s hardly any different from a “pro’s” work.
I cut my husband’s hair myself—here with clippers, and for my dad with scissors—though I still have to trim his beard afterward. For myself, I just touch up what the professional did—haha—if I had eyes in the back of my head, I’d cut my own hair too, but with longer hair, it’s hard to get an even cut.

Wow, that haircut is super cute! Congrats!

I’ve been cutting Leo’s hair myself for a while now,
too. It doesn’t look quite as professional as yours, but it’s still pretty good 😅
The first time he went to the hair salon, he looked way worse.

The first time, I actually cut his hair with a pair of children’s nail scissors (shame on me 😄), but since it went pretty well, I went ahead and bought a proper pair of hair-cutting scissors and some accessories.

Congratulations on such a great cut.

I’m impressed!

I once tried to cut my son’s hair—with a hair clipper. I held it the wrong way, all his hair was gone, and there was a really bad bald spot.

After that, I wasn’t allowed—and didn’t want—to try it again.

Nina, that turned out really great—it looks like a professional haircut.

Ever since my son was little, I’ve been able to cut hair—or rather, I was allowed to practice on him. I kept doing that until he was about 15. My mother-in-law at the time even let me cut her hair.

I’ve been cutting my husband’s hair ever since we’ve been together, and we save a lot of money that way. I’ve also gotten pretty good at cutting my own hair. I started doing that during the pandemic, and I’m getting better and better at it.

Wow, huge congratulations to all you amateur hairdressers! In South America, I actually wanted to take a hair-cutting class at the adult education center, but then they stopped offering the courses, and unfortunately, I’m not as brave as you all are…

Wow, you did a really great job, and it looks fantastic on the little one.
Back in the day, that “shaggy” hairstyle was all the rage. I had it, too.

With my long hair, I trim the ends myself—head upside down and off I go.
Maybe once a year I go to the hairdresser if I need to have a longer section cut off. That’s a job for the pro. It’s nice to treat yourself every once in a while—if only for that reason.

Back when my kids were little, I used to do it with a hair clipper, too; it worked great, even though I’m pretty careful not to cut any bald spots.

Thank you so much for all the kind words!

I’m really fascinated by how many of you “roll up your sleeves” yourselves—especially that some of you even cut your own hair. Hats off to you.

Wow, you did a really great job!!
I’ve also been cutting my husband’s and my own hair since the pandemic started. Since I have curly hair, it’s not quite as noticeable when I “mess up” a cut. Once, I accidentally set my husband’s long-hair clipper too short and cut a gap in the back of his neck… he ended up wearing a hat for a while 😂😂😂
