You can really tell it’s summer. Things are getting a bit quieter here in the Handworking Group, too. But we’re still crafting, of course:

With this beautiful weather, I was finally able to do some embroidery on the balcony again.
I just finished a birthday card for my sister-in-law:




The embroidery for my granddaughter should be finished in the next few days. Then I’ll show it to you, too.

And of course, I’ve also been crocheting on the balcony: I’ve made three beach chairs of different sizes—just in time for the start of summer!

Ruth, you really always have such great ideas. The beach chair looks really great. And so does your embroidery. Did you design that yourself? It reminds me of the embroidered cards I used to make for Easter and Christmas. I even found one of them just the other day.

I’ve now finished the fourth little dress, this time for Sternchen. I like it best. It’s her first little dress, and she looks so cute in it.

I don’t think I’d shown this yet once it was finished. Only the buttons are missing. This is the little dress for Juna’s doll.

You’ve been busy again, Monika! Very pretty! The little dress has an interesting pattern. Are those dropped stitches?

I didn’t design the embroidered picture myself. (Unfortunately, I’m not very good at drawing.) I found the chart on Pinterest. And since my sister-in-law loves Italy, I thought this would be a good fit.

Ruth, I would have totally believed that you designed that embroidery picture yourself.

The pattern is really very pretty—I’m absolutely thrilled with it. They’re not dropped stitches. It sort of fell into my hands, so to speak—completely by chance while I was experimenting with a hat. I think it looks especially nice on the little dress.

Now I’m going to finish crocheting the bag for Juna first, and then I’ll make a gauge swatch with some lovely yarn from Ina’s swap package.

  After many failed attempts (nothing turned out the way I wanted—the yarn was no good, the pattern was no good...), I started making a pair of baby booties, and now, on my third try, I’m finally happy with the result. 



Up until now, I’ve always knitted in the round, but this time I’m trying it with a seam. 

Wow, Ruth, that picture of you with your granddaughter looks absolutely beautiful. That’s a gift to cherish for a lifetime.

Andrea, I just admired your photo in the other thread. Have a wonderful vacation and enjoy it.

Thank you, everyone, for your feedback on the little dress. Here are all four babies in their new outfits. They’re all wearing the same little dress, just in different colors and sizes.

That looks so cute: everyone in matching outfits, yet each one is different! It turned out great. 

Thanks, Ruth! :) I’m really excited, too. This little dress is addictive—I’m going to design another baby dress based on it, with a few tweaks.

Monika , your quadruplets look so cute in their little dresses. It’s crazy how different the little dresses look when you use a different color for each one.

I won’t be able to do any crafting for now. I only have a few days left to make a gift for a 60th birthday. We’re invited to a double birthday party (meaning two people are celebrating).
I’ll buy the “ingredients” for it tomorrow. I’ll make something fun.

I’ve finished another sweater and leggings set—this time for a tiny baby who’s 35 cm long. I’ll post a photo tomorrow; I just need to weave in the ends first.

Monika, you’ve been very busy again, and the sweaters look really pretty—both colors are lovely.
Christina, I really like your little projects too; they’re a nice change of pace now and then when you have bigger projects on other needles. Right now, I have two projects going: I knit in the garden and then crochet in the evening. I’ve started a shirt, and my crochet project is a seat reducer for a high chair in the shape of a cushion—I’m still very much at the beginning and figuring it out.
But today I can show you the “Grandma and Grandpa” pair I finished over the weekend; they’re both sitting together on a bench, enjoying their time......

I also managed to finish a little something. The scarf was crocheted from a free pattern from here.

I crocheted and knitted these 3 dishcloths last week.
They’re all patterns from a-mano. I recreated them using different techniques.
I’ve since given the dishcloths to a friend who loves cats.

Marion, I’ve already admired your pot holders.
The scarf looks lovely and elegant—you’ve certainly been very busy again.

Ines, I just admired your grandma and grandpa in the other thread. That’s a masterpiece of yours—with sooo many little details. I keep finding something new. Simply enchantingly beautiful!

Marion, that scarf looks really elegant. There are plenty of occasions to wear it. The cooler weather is coming back way too soon. Yes, you’ll soon be able to look forward to knitting…
Your different cat-themed shawl variations look great. One of them is Tunisian crocheted, right? That’s my favorite.

Since one of my quadruplets is sitting naked in the stroller and also waiting for clothes—namely Merlin—I’ve now started an outfit for him, too. The sweater is already finished—this time I went with a different color scheme. I’ll knit the matching leggings tonight and tomorrow.

Small things are less my thing.
But the witch's staircase had to be made.
I just need some matching Halloween decorations now.

Yes, Monika, I have plenty of ideas, but unfortunately not always that much time.
I really like the sweater for your Merlin. I love turquoise! Will the pants be the same color?

How did you make the witch’s staircase, Marlene? Just like you do with paper: a strip that’s then folded? Or is there a special crochet technique for it?

Yes, Ruth, the pants are being knitted to match in that darker turquoise.

Hello everyone, and have a great start to the new week.

Monika, your sweater turned out really beautiful again—the color is so wonderfully fresh.

Ruth, I also think your mermaid is lovely; I always admire the little things that come off your needles.

Today I have something else to show you that came off my needles over the weekend. The idea came about when our grandson—who’s already sitting up—had way too much space in his high chair, and we weren’t really fond of the store-bought seat insert. So I came up with this pillow and even added a few surprises: it squeaks, it crinkles—and there’s so much for our grandson to discover and try out.

Oh, Ines, what a sweet idea! Your frog is such a great little discovery for your grandson. He’ll definitely love it. Later on, he can cuddle with it. Do you put it behind your grandson when he’s sitting in his high chair?

I’ve now finished the complete set for my Merlin, and the quadruplets are all fully dressed. Here’s what it looks like now. He’s sitting in the back left.

Last night I started knitting a home for squirrels again using the swapped felting wool. It’s a great project for relaxing in between other things.

Yes, Monika, our grandson gets the pillow behind his back, so he sits nice and steady, and the top frog legs hold him in place on the sides. It’s a joy to see him squeeze the squeaker—he’s got some strength in those little hands.
Your doll clothes are simply beautiful, and as you can see, the quadruplets love them.

Ines, that was a really great idea you had with the frog. You have to think of something like that first. Yes, the little ones have incredible energy—they’re full of pure life force that we’ve partly lost along the way. Enjoy this time; unfortunately, it’s over way too quickly.

Ladies,
I bought a size 12 knitting needle today (Langyarns—I assume it’s an Addi).
It cost a whopping 14.10 €! That’s 27 DM!!!!! Boy, oh boy, I would never have paid that much back in the DM days. Crazy. 

Anja, I could never knit with such a thick knitting needle. My joints would give out. I admire you!

I mostly knit with needle sizes between 2.5 and 3.5—sometimes even 4. Right now I’m using 5.5. But that’s still just barely within the comfortable range. I’ve used 7 or 8 before, too, but I can’t keep that up for long.

And those thin needles are driving me crazy. Size 3s are already a pain. I think sizes 4 through 7 are just right. 

Imagine you’re on sick leave and have plenty of time for your hobby. But unfortunately, you have tendonitis in your shoulder and can’t do exactly what you need to do to relieve your boredom. ☹️

Oh dear, Anja, I don’t even want to imagine that—it would be a total disaster. I have knitting hands that love holding needles and turning yarn into something beautiful. I guess the only solution is to find something else to do, like reading a book… or going for a walk in nature.

I’ve knitted another home for orphaned squirrels. It just needs to be felted. That’ll make another caretaker happy.



I’ve already decided on my next project. It’s going to be a baby dress. I’ve already picked out the yarn. But first, I want to finish crocheting the bag for Juna. I’m already in the final stages of that.

So much time, and I’m not allowed to. Oh Anja, that’s terrible. I hope you feel better soon.

I also like to knit with smaller needles. I still have some very thin needles from my grandma. They give me a nice, even stitch pattern. Unfortunately, it takes much longer than with thick needles. 

Oh dear, Anja, that’s just not right. My hands always have to be busy, too—whether it’s crafts or painting/drawing. But you’re not even allowed to do that.
I hope you get better soon so you can get back to your projects.
Hang in there—you can do it.

I like to work with thinner needles because the stitch pattern is finer. However, the handles have to be thicker than the thin needles; otherwise, I also get problems in my hands and fingers.

Now my Lara has a bolero to go with her little dress. I came up with this idea yesterday. It was quick and easy to knit and looks really cute.

Now that’s a cute idea. And so easy for kids to put on. 

Thanks, Petra! :) Yes, exactly—now I’ll have to knit even more, of course, because the other dolls need their little dresses, too. My granddaughter will be happy when I bring this to her.

Yes, Monika, you’ll never run out of work this way. And since you have so many doll children who all want to be treated equally, you’ll naturally have to knit multiple times! But the advantage is that you can then offer your patterns in several sizes at once.

I have something to show you all again. I discovered a glow-in-the-dark yarn—it’s not exactly cheap, but the effect is just amazing. So I crocheted a firefly that glows in the dark:

Oh wow, that’s such a cute firefly. I had no idea there was glow-in-the-dark yarn. Very cool! You can go for a walk outside at night with it and won’t go unnoticed.

Hey everyone, I’m totally excited to start knitting soul warmers and bolero jackets right now. Now I finally know what to do with the merino wool I bought a few months ago. I’m also going to knit something like that for my girlfriend for Christmas. She’s coming over in a week, and she can even pick out the yarn herself.

Monika, I’m not sure if this is bright enough. For walks, there’s this yarn that reflects light, like a cat’s-eye reflector on a bike. I think it’s safer :-))

Oh, how cute, Monika. That’s such a lovely idea with the little boleros. It really adds a special finishing touch to the rest of the outfits for the dolls.

Ruth, your firefly is just great. I knew this glow-in-the-dark yarn existed, but I haven’t tried it yet. It really does seem to glow brightly in the dark. Also great for bag charms or crocheted ghosts/spirits.

The bunny pattern is by “Schneckenkind” here. It’s really fun to crochet.

I’m trying to freestyle a pair of granny square pants. I still have so many black scraps left, they’ll just be different shades. Let’s see if I can stick with it to the end. I saw it on Pinterest and thought it was pretty. 

Pants made from a granny square? That sounds interesting. I’m curious to see how it turns out. 

Yes, I’m also curious to see the result, Anja. I can’t quite picture a pair of pants made from granny squares right now.

Andrea, your bunny is really too cute. I can easily believe it gets cuddled all the time. And your mosaics are always a joy to look at.

I’m busy knitting little boleros right now, so I’ll have one to go with every little dress. It’s really fun and I can do it on the side.

some great things have been created here again...

Granny-style pants—hmm, I’m curious to see how they turn out; I could definitely see myself wearing something like that at the beach.

Monika, the idea with the bolero or “soul warmer” is lovely—that way, even the tiniest doll moms can easily get the little jacket on.

Glow-in-the-dark yarn—I hadn’t heard of that before either; a lovely idea with the firefly.

I’m currently crocheting up a few 50g scraps—let’s see where this takes me. I’ll show the result here soon.

Now I’ve finished two more boleros. I wanted to try out different sizes. For Sternchen, I knitted it a bit tighter and shorter; for little Merle, I made it wider. What I noticed is that cotton isn’t very stretchy. Acrylic, wool, or a blend works much better for this.

Does anyone here sew? Besides Inge? I’m just wondering what it’s like when you get a pattern as a PDF. Do you have to glue the pieces together like you used to with the Bravo Star patterns? 

Monika, the boleros are really adorable! For my dolls, I’d choose the other pattern—is that the one by Sternchen made of cotton? I’ll keep that tip in mind!

Anja, that’s exactly right: You glue the individual parts of the sewing pattern together. But with good instructions, that’s not a problem. You just have to make sure to print the sewing pattern at its original size.

Christina, yes, Sternchen’s one is made from thicker cotton (100 m). I showed the very snug version here. I’m currently knitting another version with the same yarn, which is also a bit longer.

The yarn is a blend of merino, cotton and silk, it knits up super fast and the pattern is really just "knit two, purl two"..... 
I hope I can knit the back just as quickly, next week there are quite a lot of exhausting doctor's appointments coming up.... 
I'm still diligently reading along, even if quietly....

I’ve tested negative since Friday, and we’ve been on vacation in the Harz Mountains since Saturday. 

I made the two bags during the week I had COVID.  I had severe circulation problems the whole time, but lying down and crocheting was possible.



All in all, I’ve now finished 6 bags for the guests at Anton’s birthday party:

It’s been a while, but I’m back again. I just took a look at all your beautiful creations—you’ve been so hard at work despite the heat!
I’ve finally managed to dress my little one in a full summer outfit and finish the pattern for it. With cotton, that wasn’t a problem given the temperatures, and the little pieces are quick to crochet. I’m really enjoying it, and I still have lots of new ideas in mind, so I’ll be able to delight you with pictures again in the future and participate more here—I’ve really missed it, but sometimes other things just take priority.

Oh Mel, that looks so pretty—the way you’ve dressed your little one. Great color combo, too. I’m really glad you’re actively participating here again—we’ve really missed you. It’s great to have you back, and now you’re making the doll moms happy, too.

Ines, your doily with the flower is a real work of art. It’s amazing what little details like beads and flowers can do.

Sandra, I’m also glad to have you back here. Anton’s guests will surely love your bags. And the idea of crocheting a cover for the bottle is practical, too. I’ve knitted covers with thick yarn for our insulated water bottles so they stay warm longer. I hope you’ll be back to full health soon and can join in on everything with your family.

Marlene, the pattern and colors of your soul warmer look great. That would be something for me, too.

Steffi, I’d already admired your gloves in another thread. You really have to take good care of them. Your shirt looks great, too. You can create amazing pattern combinations with knit and purl stitches. I love that, too.

My friend is visiting right now and gave me a great idea. I’m working on that right now. Other than that, I’ve finished the “soul warmer” for Sternchen—the larger bolero version. Here’s what it looks like now.

The great thing about this pattern is that it can be worn with either the right side or the wrong side facing out, Moni.
I’m back at the first pattern, where I’ve marked the beginning and end. After that, I’ll work on the cuff pattern again.
I’m curious to see what the soul warmer will look like once it’s sewn together.
The yarn is very pleasant to knit with.

I can definitely picture your doilies as wall decor, Ines.

I’ve also been going back and forth about which color combination to use, Sandra.
I think this one suits winter.
The little ones will surely love the pouches.

You guys are so hard at work! I’m totally blown away by the amazing things you’re creating. I couldn’t say which one I like best.

  I’m currently working on several projects at the same time. A tunic and a granny square summer sweater—both based on purchased patterns—are in the final stages and should be finished before our vacation in early August. A bag, for which I’m writing my first pattern, is basically finished, but I didn’t like the straps I’d crocheted so far. But I think I’m on the right track now ;-)

Here in Lower Austria, it’s supposed to get up to around 35 degrees today. I’m going to finish up my bookkeeping this morning and then settle into the shade with my crochet supplies this afternoon—and of course, take a dip in the pool every now and then.

Claudia, I’d already suggested here that you crochet the straps in Tunisian crochet. That way, they won’t stretch out.

I’m currently using up leftover yarn again and making crocheted wind chimes.

  Other than that, of course, nothing’s finished—I’m always just starting new things. *grin*

I’m curious to see the granny-style summer sweater. I started a pair of pants, a top, and a sweater in that style, but then I thought, wow, that’s way too warm for hot weather! So now it’s all on hold. 

Anja, thanks for the tip—I haven’t tried Tunisian crochet yet, but it’s definitely worth a try. I crocheted the bag using 5 mm cotton yarn from Bobbiny, though—unlike most of the patterns usually available—I used a slightly more delicate pattern. I also wanted to add a slightly playful carrying handle. Of course, this is also crocheted with Bobbiny yarn, so it’s super sturdy.

The summer sweater is based on a pattern by mi-li—it’s totally airy and definitely perfect for balmy summer evenings. I’m really looking forward to trying it on for the first time. It should be ready by the weekend.

I’m really curious to see your pants. I absolutely love granny square pants, but I can’t imagine they won’t stretch out at the knees over time. Do you have any experience with that?

I wanted to make the mi-li sweater, too—it’s so pretty!

No, unfortunately I don’t have any experience with baggy pants. But I could imagine that’s the case.

Anja, it’s totally understandable that you don’t necessarily want to crochet the granny pants in this heat. But you did manage to finish the wind chimes, and they’re very decorative! Adorable, your kitty with the granny headscarf. I guess that’s her sun protection? ;-))

Monika, I like the second bolero for Sternchen even better than the first one. The first one did look a bit too tight. I’m already excited to see what new idea you’ll come up with next.

And I crocheted a few lanterns just in time for the summer party, and now they can decorate my balcony:

I was able to use up some more scraps from my temperature blanket while doing it.

Oh Ruth..... these are so “cute”.... and such beautiful colors—they look like a garden party 😍
I’m still knitting my summer shirt.... The front and back are already joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind-off. And I’ve already got the stitches for the collar on the needle, too.
  Our house has really nice, thick walls.... That keeps it “pleasantly” cool inside, as long as I lower the outside blinds in time—at least a little, just to keep the direct sun out.
Yesterday I laid out the garden hoses and hooked up the pump. We have two huge rainwater tanks.... Just put the pump in from the top, hook up the garden hose, and off you go.... That way, at least the vegetables get a little water, and I still save water.

I’m still crocheting on the new idea from my friend. Today we tweaked the original version a bit. For me, ideas usually come to me as I’m working on them.

I’m crocheting pennants and tinkering a bit with the letters.

It all started with a gift for a new baby, and I crocheted these pennants. 



Then I just kept going—after all, there’s plenty of yarn... 





Now I’m thinking of something with Christmas motifs.... 

I’m checking in again: After a short break in the mountains, I attended a knitting meetup today with nearly 50 women! I saw so many interesting projects there: beautiful, feather-light scarves, intricate-looking sweaters, and elegant, diagonally knit tops… I’ve just signed up again for the next meetup in November and for a day with the organizer next month, since I’ve fallen in love with a particular sweater.
We took it easy during our three days in the Lower Engadine: It was too hot for strenuous hikes, even at an altitude of over 2,000 meters! So my sister and I took a leisurely walk—first across the plain, then through the forest to the swimming lake—and after a lunch break, we continued on to Pontresina, where we had tea at “our” café. Yesterday, my husband and I took the chairlift up to an alpine pasture and then, on a stroller-friendly path to the neighboring alpine pasture, we walked more than we hiked (along the way, we revisited a well-known local picture-book story at various stops) and finally let the gondola carry us back down into the valley before we boarded the train for the journey home. 



Petra, I really like your pennants with letters. There are so many occasions where they can be used as decorations.

Wow, Christina, I’d love a break like that too—it’s right up my alley. A knitting get-together with 50 women—now that’s something! I imagine it would be great.

I’m just stopping by briefly today—we spent the whole day celebrating with friends: our 30th wedding anniversary. It was really lovely, despite the heat. So the knitting needles got a break for a change.

Monika, I’d like to congratulate you wholeheartedly on 30 years—most people don’t even make it that far these days. I think it’s wonderful to celebrate this day with friends.

Ruth, those lanterns immediately reminded me of a plan I had—to use up some leftover yarn and make lanterns like that for our garden seating area. Well, we’ll see—my to-do list is long, and right now I’m putting quite a few things off.

As for my book project, it’s back to square one, since my previous file has vanished into thin air.

Oh Marlene, that’s such a shame. For me, something like that would be a total disaster! I always make extra backups of everything on USB drives or my hard drive.

Marlene, the “soul warmer” is just right for whatever winter might have in store for us! It turned out really nice—I love the colors, too!
