"Always on hand" has a permanent spot in my purse. You never know when you’ll spot something you want to buy, and these crocheted shopping bags have plenty of room for just about anything.

This bag is crocheted in spiral rounds and is also perfect for using up your cotton scraps.

Shopping nets are quick and easy to crochet. The “Mama” shopping bag  is crocheted using filet technique. The lettering and the heart immediately show who it is meant for. The pattern is written out round by round. There is also a counting chart.


If you’d rather have something a bit more compact for shopping, you might enjoy the Tunisian-crocheted origami bag. The technique is very simple and is explained in detail in the pattern. You only need to crochet a rectangle, which is then folded origami-style and sewn together (hence the name “origami bag”!)


The “Beach Life” bag is actually intended as a beach bag, but of course it’s also suitable for shopping, for example when strolling through a summer market. It is crocheted using the tapestry technique, which makes it very sturdy.

The BUNTE TÜTE has the shape of a plastic bag (like the ones you know from produce), but is absolutely sustainable and, of course, soooo much prettier ♥

Crocheted from cotton (or, as here, with a cotton bobbel), there are no limits to the width and height...




Mias Market Bag is a "classic" shopping net. 2 sizes are described—but the size can easily be adjusted individually.

Shopping bags are also a great project for less experienced sewists and a lovely little gift for loved ones.

Our PUPPI sewing pattern is for a market bag available in 2 sizes; it’s made with French seams and therefore doesn’t need a lining. Thanks to the gusseted bottom, it can hold quite a lot, and when the shopping bag isn’t in use, it tucks away into the storage pouch (which also serves as the inner pocket).

You can also knit a beautiful shopping net. Either in a melon design like this one, or in your favorite color. The pattern is very easy to knit.

Kajitsu can be used for fruit and vegetables as well as for other small shopping trips.
When the net bag isn’t needed, you can store it compactly in your jacket pocket or handbag.

Here’s a small selection of sustainable shopping bags I’ve sewn over the years; many of the ones I made, I later took apart and used the side panels to sew a patchwork quilt. My “sandwich daughter” saw it, and I saw her seeing it :-) and then it was gone, but that’s okay with me, because she would’ve gotten one anyway—she was just a little faster than her sisters :-)
