Dear users, dear authors,
how can you tell the left side from the right side when doing handicrafts?

The right side is always the “nice” side—the outer side that you see when you’re wearing a garment. With some crocheted or knitted patterns, however, both sides look the same. In those cases, you don’t need to worry about which side is right and which is left.

With fabrics, if there are printed patterns, the right side (i.e., the “nice” side that you’ll see later) has more vibrant colors. On the left side (i.e., the inside), the colors are much fainter. But there are also piece-dyed fabrics, where the inside is also vivid in color. In principle, though, you can usually tell the difference with the naked eye.

Best regards, Ina

Seams are always hidden on the inside, the left side.

Basically, it’s just as described: The right side is the “nice” side.

When I first started sewing, I once read: “The right side is the one you make it into! If you can’t tell, then no one else will either!”

In fact, looking back, I realized that I sometimes mixed them up at first with solid-color fabrics. It didn’t bother anyone :-)
The main thing is that you like the result in the end! :-)

You can also tell the right and left sides by looking at the selvedge. On the right side, the selvedge is clean and clearly visible in the weave pattern, which is not the case on the left side. With some fabrics, you have to look very closely; often, the right side of solid-colored fabrics has a slight silky sheen, which is how you can tell which side is the right side.

Best regards, Inge

When working with filet crochet or double-faced fabric, there are two “right” sides.
