Dear users, dear authors,
Imagine you’ve run out of yarn. The stores are closed, and there are no online deliveries on the weekend. There’s no way to get any yarn for at least a few days. What do you do?
I’d take out some old items I haven’t worn in a while and turn them into something new, or I’d sit down at my sewing machine or embroidery machine and have some fun with that.
Well, I can certainly manage a few days without yarn. There are other things to keep me busy, after all.
It happens quite often that I have to wait for yarn anyway, since I pretty much only buy the yarn I need for a specific project. And then I already have the project in mind and want to get started, but I have to wait until the yarn I ordered arrives.
(My yarn stash actually consists almost entirely of leftover yarn, because I usually order a little extra “just to be safe.”)
Aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh Josefa, what a nightmare 😱😱😱
Yeah, what do you do in such a traumatic situation? Tackle the neglected housework and drive your family crazy 🤣 Luckily, my yarn stash is big enough that I’m safe from this experience for quite a while yet 😇😇😇
But I’d do what Inge does—sit down at the sewing machine or do some embroidery. Or maybe paint some furniture. Or pour some concrete again. Or maybe just unravel all my UFOs. Doing a jigsaw puzzle would also be an option. Or, as a last resort—clean the house.
Oh Josefa, your question really hits close to home for all of us. Just imagining the situation triggers a reaction in me: I get frustrated. Why didn’t I plan ahead? Why don’t they deliver faster? Why does it take so long with the post office? What, a 5- to 7-day delivery time? Why am I now getting another email saying the delivery is delayed? Grumble, grumble… the project is already fully in my head and just wants to get started. But without yarn, we’re stuck in neutral.
For me, the only thing that helps is distraction. I have to keep myself busy with other things: housework, my husband, everything that’s been left undone.
And before you know it, the mailman rings the doorbell and brings the long-awaited yarn. And just like that, I’m in a great mood again and can’t wait to unpack it to see if the color is right. If it is, I’m overjoyed and know exactly what I’ll be doing that day.
That would be really scary, which is why I always keep a certain amount in stock at home. But it’s the same with books—when the urge strikes, I need everything ready to go; I really don’t like waiting. Although that’s not really a problem with books anymore—you can always get an eBook right away, even on Sunday or at midnight—but with yarn, it’s a bit trickier.... I should check my stash....
Oh dear Josefa,
for us craft enthusiasts, it’s a nightmare. But I feel the same way as Ina.
Otherwise, I’d catch up on everything around the house that’s been left undone.
But since I also really enjoy painting/drawing, I’d distract myself with that. I also still have my beads and diamond painting.
There’s always something to do. Some little UFOs are also still waiting to be finished.
That way, the wait for the missing yarn is shortened.
Normally, I only start a project once I have the yarn on hand.
If it does happen, though, it’s not the end of the world (unless it’s a commissioned piece or a gift that needs to be finished).
I love music and have a wide selection at home. I also have a large collection of books. Then there are thousands of photos that need to be labeled and sorted. Last but not least, there’s a big box of construction paper sitting on the cabinet, waiting to be turned into window decorations.
When I read the headline, I thought:
What a silly question—I’d just buy some more 😇😇😇
So I’d just keep working on another project (I usually have 3–4 going at the same time).
But actually, that could never happen to me, since I always make sure to have enough on hand 🤔
Or I’d just try out a new project using pattern XY, which has been waiting to be made for ages 🙄
Or maybe just read a book again—somehow I never seem to get around to it anymore. I wonder why 😇
