Dear Josefa, since I’m knitting on a UFO today—thanks to you—and it won’t be finished today, I can already share my yarn usage for January.

I made 3 hats, 4 baby booties, 1 pair of felt shoes, 3 headbands, 2 loop scarves made from very thick yarn, 1 men’s scarf, 1 cell phone case, 1 bear jacket, and 1 comfort blanket.

For these 17 items, I used 1,208 grams of yarn for crocheting and knitting.

And February is over, too. Since I sewed a little more than usual, my consumption came to 788 grams across 19 pieces. My total consumption for 2022 is 1,996 grams; I purchased 1,950 grams.

I mostly knitted dishcloths as Easter gifts.

And I sewed and knitted for the dolls at the preschool.

I knitted a doll blanket using the patterns from my dishcloths.

In April, I knitted and crocheted 518 grams across 7 projects.

I crocheted cotton for shopping bags, finished a triangular shawl, and also made shoes and a hat for the dolls.

I also made a cord using the Knitting Mill in April. It was something totally new for me, and I used it to make a small cell phone pouch.

My total yarn usage for 2022 is now 2,969 grams

How did it go in 2022?

Things went well for me. I used 79 grams more than I bought 😂

In total, I used 6,179 grams of yarn in 2022 (not counting UFOs).

I did some sewing too, but I don’t keep track of that because I mostly use fabric from old clothes, bedding, etc.

Oh dear, I think I didn’t write down various ribbed projects—I really need to take stock again 🤔
I’m guessing that since I bought quite a bit of lace yarn this year (which I haven’t even started knitting yet),
my total will be astronomically high 😂😂

Oh dear, it would be way too much if I were to show everything I’ve sewn over the course of the year all at once here. Because aside from the things I sew for myself or my family, I also sew a whole lot of items—like clothes, toys, etc.—for the Schweinfurter Kindertafel.
For myself, I’ve been knitting about 1,100 grams of cotton yarn since spring for a cardigan, but when it’ll be finished is anyone’s guess… I’m really noticing right now that my hands don’t always do what I want them to; they cramp up and hurt when I’ve done a lot of knitting or sewing in a day.

Best wishes, Inge

I’m not quite as diligent as Inge, but I don’t keep a record of my consumption or purchases either. As we say here in Cologne: et kütt, wie et kütt (it is what it is).
Today, for example, is a typical day. I have more than enough leftover yarn and stash at home for larger projects. The two UFOs are finished, so I’d like to start something new. Quick decision, a peek into the stash boxes.... uuuuh.... of course, not everything’s there. Aside from the fact that I don’t even need a whole skein, it’s hardly worth placing an order for just 50 g.... Actually, I didn’t want to buy anything else before the Advent calendar.....

I have an Excel spreadsheet for purchases and usage. In addition, I have most of my yarn listed in Ravelry.

Stash as of early November:

Purchased in 2023 = 2,900 grams - at the beginning of the year I went to the factory outlet to shop for the color campaign; otherwise, I bought cotton yarn in September and October. For me, I bought rather little. In 2022 it was 6,100 grams, but before that was Covid, when you couldn't really go shopping.

Knitted/crocheted up in 2023 = 2,685 grams (everything that is completely finished, UFOs not counted, and there are a lot of them)

Sold online = 2,061 grams

So I have reduced my stash.

I have 187 different yarns/colors listed in Ravelry

I sewed a few little things this year. But I don't buy fabrics; I use clothing and bed/table linens when I sew something.

When I look at the numbers like that, I get quite dizzy. Far too much for two hands ......

How’s everything going for you?

Yes, I keep finishing things. Often, I give them away right away.

In 2023, I knitted and crocheted a total of 3,359 grams of yarn.

My stash has gotten smaller (partly due to selling unwanted yarn online)

My UFO pile hasn’t grown.

In total, my Excel list shows 51 finished pieces—mostly wrist warmers, pennant garlands for newborns, and dish towels in 2023.

I purchased 3,150 grams—600 grams of which were for the color challenge, and the rest was a new assortment of cotton yarn in various colors.

My last project in 2023 was a pair of leg warmers. They’re now finished, the loose ends are woven in, and they’re just waiting for nice weather so I can take pictures.

Hi,
I’ve used about 1,280 g / 8,000 m
plus a few UFOs totaling at least 800 g/4,000 m that are in the final stretch (unfortunately, Christmas and birthday gifts got in the way—otherwise they’d be finished 🙄

I’m knitting more now, so I’m not going through as much yarn (as I do when crocheting) 🤔

I bought 4,540 g with about 5,700 m 😇
In total, I definitely have 10 kg of yarn 🙃😂
... and already at least 10 projects planned (on top of the roughly 10 UFOs 😲)

My yarn purchases and yarn usage are looking pretty bad. I did a lot of sewing and embroidery in 2024.

There are still lots of UFOs lying around, and I definitely want to reduce them in the coming year. Only little details are missing, and the pattern is usually already written for them too—apart from the finishing touches and photos.

This year I bought 600 grams of yarn, and used 628 grams for 10 finished projects. So my stash has shrunk 🤣🤣🤣

As for fabric, I only bought Christmas fabrics for lots of ideas. Unfortunately, real life had other plans, so none of it got used. But as they say, after Christmas is before Christmas.....
