DIY Wedding Dress

Hi,
I was just watching *Between Tulle and Tears* and it occurred to me once again that you could actually do a DIY wedding dress. Has anyone here done that, or could you imagine doing it?
I heard once that it brings bad luck to do a DIY wedding dress—“So many stitches, so many tears”—unless someone else sews the last few stitches.
I could imagine crocheting a beautiful dress for myself.

Well, my friend sewed her own dress back in 1986. She’s still with that same man, and they have two sons who are now adults. So I don’t think sewing your own dress has anything to do with marital happiness.

I’ve seen some absolutely gorgeous crocheted dresses online. It’s definitely a lot of work, but if you start early, why not? And you’ll have a one-of-a-kind dress. Plus, with every stitch, you can think about your upcoming wedding day and let your mind wander.

If you still have plenty of time before the big day, then it’s a lovely idea.

Those crocheted wedding dresses look absolutely gorgeous, but are they practical enough? I’d have some concerns—for example, if someone’s button got caught on it.

When you sew it yourself, of course, you have every opportunity to make your dreams of “the one dress” come true. I take my hat off to anyone who can do that.

Best regards, Marlies

Yes, crocheted dresses are so beautiful, and I think that if you’ve put in that much effort—even if it’s sewn—it’s something truly special.

A few years ago, a beautifully crocheted wedding dress took the internet by storm.
A young American woman would sit on the bus every morning on her way to work with
a crochet hook and yarn, crocheting the dream dress she’d designed herself.
It took her 5 months to complete, and she spent only about $30
on the yarn and lining fabric. I was blown away back then… just like the whole world ;-) Too bad I’m not allowed to post a photo… the dress is so stunningly beautiful!

I know what you mean—a gorgeous dress. I really love the elves in The Lord of the Rings. I could definitely see myself crocheting a dress in that style, too

If I were to get married again today, I could probably see myself sewing it myself.
Back then (we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at the end of August), though, I wasn’t very skilled with the sewing machine yet and still had one of those cheap supermarket models.

Of course, whether you decide to make it yourself also depends on the kind of wedding dress you want.

I had a knee-length halter-neck petticoat dress in red with black details. I wouldn’t dare wear a floor-length dress with a hoop skirt now, but looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted any other dress (or any other husband :-D).

Cool.
It doesn’t bring bad luck if you sew or crochet it yourself.
It’s the year 2021 AD, and this dark superstition is still around... 👻🙈
I’ve been married to the same man for 36 years and sewed my own skirt. (🤔 Was that the reason for our successful marriage in the end???)
Then go ahead and get started, and let us know how it goes.
I saw a crocheted dress at the craft store down the street. The bride had made it herself. But unfortunately, she didn’t end up wearing it. It was probably too sexy 😉...

Great! 36 years—we might just make it if we got married tomorrow, but crocheting a dress by tomorrow would be a bit of a tight squeeze :-).
I have an idea of what it should look like, should I ever get married. Not sexy, but more of an elfin look—something along those lines.

Why not start practicing? A summer dress along those lines. Then you’ll also see if it suits you.

I’ve been dreaming for a long time of crocheting myself a long skirt for the summer.

I wanted to crochet a long summer dress for myself this year, but somehow I never got around to it, and the weather wasn’t really suitable for a summer dress anyway. But I’ve definitely got it planned for next year

I sewed this outfit for my wedding 30 years ago. Unfortunately, it's a bit blurry because I took a photo of an old photo.

Best regards, Inge

I sewed my own wedding dress because I wanted a skirt that would swing wide when I danced. We’ve been married for 42 years now and have two grown children. Oh, and we still dance together.

No, I didn’t sew my wedding dress myself—my mom took care of that for both of us daughters. I wanted something very simple and elegant—definitely not a princess dress. The result:
