My thumb hurts, so I can’t knit :-(

Hi everyone,

I think I have “texting thumb”—I’ve had it for a while now, and maybe it’s also a bit of a crocheting and knitting thumb. I’m sooo bored without my crafts. Today I’m icing, massaging, and stretching my thumb, and I’ve firmly resolved to take it easy and not knit. But now I WANT to knit even more... I really don’t know what to do with myself without it... :-(

Then wishing your thumb a speedy recovery; I have severe osteoarthritis in my right thumb joint, and knitting helps me, though only with thick needles now, 4 mm and up

@Inge: Sometimes it actually feels better when I’m knitting. I also try not to knit for more than 30 minutes and then take at least a 1-hour break. But my gut tells me I should take a break. So I’ll just do that...

Oh dear, Anja, I can totally understand your dilemma. When I broke my wrist, I couldn’t—and wasn’t allowed to—do anything for weeks. It’s really hard not being able to do the crafts you love. But at least you can think about them and make plans for later. You’ll just need a little patience for now. Hang in there—things will get better! Get well soon from me, too.

Dear Anja, I understand you sooo well. I wouldn’t exactly be bored, but my hands would keep reaching for the needles to give it a try. Maybe it’ll comfort you to know that some people here have been through something similar. The joy is especially great when you can do it again without pain. And your appreciation for your hobby will increase enormously.

I’ve also had phases when I didn’t feel like doing crafts. For weeks. And now I want to, but I can’t. The irony of life... 
I just tried it for half an hour and it went reasonably well. I’ll try it again briefly tonight. And I’ll keep applying ointment, massaging, and doing stretching exercises. 

I totally believe what you said about appreciation, dear Monika. So often, you only appreciate things once you no longer have them.
