Dear Andrea,
I haven’t had a chance yet to send you a little note in this thread. I’m making up for that now—you’re still in faraway Norway, with your bags practically packed.
Yes, the last day of work—I’m sure everyone knows that feeling. It’s always sad when emotions are involved. You look back: on the early days, your lack of language skills, your coworkers, the everyday things you now have to let go of. You’ve spent so much time in this place, poured your energy into it, had good days and bad days—and you, at least, know every inch of the hotel. Over the last few months, it’s become increasingly difficult for you because working at your hotel has changed.
Now it was time to take a step toward the future. The time in Norway was wonderful, but eventually it lost its appeal, and new priorities emerged that have become important to you over time—such as staying in touch with your parents and children. Every step requires a certain degree of maturity. And this phase demands a lot from us. We have doubts, talk ourselves into keeping going, weigh our options, can’t sleep at night, discuss the pros and cons, fears surface—but ultimately, we have to face the new situation with courage.
Once we’ve made the decision with both our heads and our hearts, the rest usually falls into place. It’s like running down the mountain before we’ve laboriously climbed it. But I always use my own imagery. I just saw you climbing that mountain :-)
Well, and then, of course, comes the time to say goodbye. You’ve spent a lot of your life in Norway and now you have to let go of that part of your life. In your memories, you’ll take only the beautiful things with you: you’ll always remember the high blue sky, the clear air, the sensational view of the fjords, and your Thai colleague. You forget the negative things anyway—there’s no room for them in your heart.
And when you’re back in Germany, it’ll be like a fresh start or coming home after a very long journey. We’ll all be curious to hear how it feels for you. Until then, we’ll all keep our fingers crossed for a safe trip home.
The world is beautiful wherever loved ones are waiting for us :-)
Warm regards from Ina
