Crafting with the Little Ones: Wind Catchers

Hello everyone,

last week our grandson Oskar was with us all day for childcare because his new daycare spot wasn’t available yet. Every day I came up with things to make his day with us exciting and interesting. Since we have a big garden and it’s summer, of course we were outside most of the time. There’s always something to discover and do there.

But we also did some crafting. I got out my big boxes of ribbons, and we made a dream catcher/wind catcher. Just choose colorful ribbons, cut them, and tie them onto a metal ring. You can dash through the garden with it and watch the ribbons flutter, or hang it in an exposed spot where the wind can make the colorful ribbons flutter. Maybe that’s an idea for you too?

Warm regards, Ina

Dear Ina, that’s a really lovely idea for kids, and it’s such a joy to see the dreamcatcher fluttering in the wind with all those colorful ribbons.

For such little ones, spending time at Grandma’s—making beautiful things with her and exploring the garden—is such a highlight. That’s sure to stay in your memory for a long time, too. The little ones grow up so fast; you really have to enjoy every single day.

It’s great that you’re doing something like this. :) Definitely better than daycare.

Hi Ina,

I agree with Monika.
There is sooooo much to discover in your garden, too. Watering the flowers at Grandma’s with your own little kids’ watering can is definitely fun. I always loved doing that as a child, too.
We also filled old “spray bottles” with water and wrote words on the sidewalk. There was also a chalkboard and chalk (I had one like that to stand up when I was a child).
It’s really interesting when you see and watch a ladybug, or watch bees or butterflies sitting on a flower and sipping nectar.
Watching the fish in the pond, or helping Grandma with the harvest, too.

Children simply love things to be very colorful, and when it flutters so beautifully in the wind, that’s just great, and they’re proud of their homemade creation.

That’s true, children/grandchildren grow up so quickly. Unfortunately, I don’t have any grandchildren (yet).
I used to do lots of crafts with my children, too. We had so much fun.
That also encourages children’s creativity.
My youngest son back then even made up his own dice games (with spaces like miss 1 turn, roll again, ...move forward).
There are so many possibilities.

You could also set up a medium-sized mop bucket a short distance away and try to hit the bucket with a small ball, or get the ball to land in the bucket. Or throw cans, like at the fair.

Have a nice evening, everyone

Dear Monika, dear Andrea - you joined me for a little dip into the lovely, colorful world of children. Little ones have so much fun with simple things and simply enjoy life. This positive energy is just so soothing.

Oskar also planted a plant in a flowerpot for his new home. But of course, before that, there was plenty of playing with the flowerpot. And in the end he found a firebug in the garden and put it in his flowerpot - "I'm taking this with me!"

Today was his first day at the new daycare. He likes it; tomorrow he’s going back :-)

I wish you a lovely afternoon.
Best regards, Ina
