Dear users, dear authors,
today is International Women's Day. What does this day mean to you?

International Women’s Day is very important to me. On this day, we draw attention to women’s equality. There is a large wage gap between men and women. It is much harder for women to reach leadership positions. Women are also much worse off when it comes to the distribution of wealth. Balancing family and career is very important. Because, honestly, we have to admit that housework and family work are still done predominantly by women, and without pay.
The issue of violence is also important: whether domestic violence, sexualized violence, or abuse ... all the way to human trafficking and forced prostitution.

It’s not for nothing that it is called “World” Women’s Day or International Women’s Day. If we look beyond Germany’s borders, the situation of women’s rights is far worse. Just think of female genital mutilation or the cruel forced fattening of young girls, as is common in Mauritania.
The ban on abortion, for example in Poland, is a step backward.

International Women’s Day gives us an opportunity to think of the courageous women who fought or are fighting for women’s rights: for example Clara Zetkin, Olympe de Gouges, Sojourner Truth,  Louise Otto Peters, Simone de Beauvoir,...

Of course, that is not all.

Anyone who has ever purchased a pattern from me knows that I give my designs women’s names. Behind every design is a strong personality. Because we need role models.

The fact that there needs to be an International Women’s Day unfortunately shows just how much women are still disadvantaged.
Even in Germany, where the Basic Law states that “all people are equal” or something to that effect, society still has a long way to go in this regard.

Only very few countries have adopted the principle of “equal pay for equal work—regardless of gender.”

This day was a holiday in Berlin...I think that’s great—I wish it were a holiday worldwide too...but many generations of women after us will still have to fight for equality...there’s still a very long way to go...good luck with that!
