Crochet Sock Size

Hi, I’ve just discovered crochet socks.
Now I have a question about the size and hope someone here can help me. How do you figure out the size? I’m crocheting from the toe up and don’t know how many stitches to use. Is there a guideline, like with hats? With hats, you just keep increasing until you reach the desired measurement in cm.
  I crocheted my socks following the pattern, but the number of stitches wasn’t right. I just kept trying them on my foot. That works, but if I want to crochet for friends, it gets a bit awkward.

I find so many patterns for crocheted socks. How do they manage to have sizes ranging from 22 to 45, for example? I mean, they don’t actually crochet separate pairs for every size just to see if they really fit, do they?

I knit socks. There are size charts for those. They’re always made the same way, with cm measurements and stitch counts; only the stitch patterns change.

I think it’s the same with crocheted socks. There will be a size chart for a specific yarn, and you can look up the stitch count and cm measurement for your size, then replace the pattern details with your own measurements. 

Alternatively, you could just start and keep measuring your foot as you go. Recommendation: Crochet both socks at the same time, or write down all the measurements very precisely for the second one. That way, though, you might have to rip out your work more often because it suddenly gets too tight or too loose and doesn’t fit. 

Thanks for that, but I’d really like to know how to handle the sizing. How do you know for sure that it’s the size specified if no gauge is given? Every yarn is different, after all.

Yes, I came up with all the patterns that are in my shop myself.

As for the size: Usually, the pattern specifies the yarn used to make that particular model. Then I look up the yarn online or ask the pattern designer—that way, I get the gauge and can compare it to my own yarn. Was that your question?
