Christmas markets 2020 / partly online

Dear users, dear designers,
the situation with the Christmas markets in 2020 isn’t really working out, but I’ve heard that you can visit some Christmas markets online and possibly even shop there. Do you know more about this?

I haven’t heard anything about that yet. In any case, I think it’s a real shame that there won’t be a Christmas market this year. It’s not really about shopping—it’s mainly about the cozy atmosphere. And unfortunately, you can’t recreate that online.

I haven’t heard anything like that yet either, but you won’t get that Christmas spirit online. Personally, I’m going to really miss our small town’s lovingly decorated Christmas market this year, and I especially feel for our local retailers.

Yes, there are quite a few.
Since so many other trade shows and markets have been canceled this year, some organizers and companies are now hosting them online—including via social media platforms.

I’ve already participated in two online trade shows, though they tend to focus more on finished products. Still, it’s helped raise my profile, so I’ll also be participating in two online Christmas markets (both as a seller and as a buyer).

Of course, the atmosphere is quite different, but that also depends heavily on the organizer—some put in a lot of effort, and especially when they’re live events, the exhibitors try to create a festive atmosphere as well.

How could you electronically recreate the blend of scents from mulled wine, roasted almonds, and sizzling food stalls that smell so wonderful? Anyone who’s ever visited a real Christmas market and taken it all in with all their senses (smells, scents, colorful stalls, an abundance of Christmas decorations, large decorated Christmas trees, Christmas carols, souvenir photos with Santa, atmospheric trumpet solos from the town hall tower, meeting up with friends, etc. etc.), gets a twinkle in their eyes just at the mention of “Christmas market.” An online Christmas market simply can’t achieve that. I’ll just wait for next year.
