It depends! People who appreciate handmade items will probably be happier with such a personal gift than with a store-bought one. But there are also people who don’t appreciate that kind of thing at all. They often think you’re just trying to save money (haha!).
And then there are those who aren’t into crocheted items, for example, but might enjoy another kind of craft project or something sewn.
My grandchildren, for example, love the amigurumi I crochet and can’t get enough of them (their parents have to put the brakes on), but I don’t need to bother giving them crocheted or knitted clothing. They wouldn’t wear that.
My family definitely appreciates them. And actually, they’re always looking forward to me making a little something for them myself for their birthdays or Christmas and surprising them with it.
Yes, my son and his family all really appreciate that I knit for the grandchildren. They love it every time a package arrives from me. And my friend is also happy when she receives something homemade.
It really depends on the recipient and the gift itself.
Most people I know really appreciate it and are always happy when I give them something I’ve made myself. After all, it shows that you’ve “sacrificed” your valuable time for them.
However, I’ve heard from many people that some recipients weren’t so happy and threw the things away or the like. That’s sad.
There are also handmade gifts that I personally find rather pointless and not very pretty... But I’d still be happy to receive them. Because I know how much work went into them and how much effort the person put in.
I’m giving my nephew a crocheted baby blanket for Christmas. (if I finish it by then)
I’ve been working on it for months now.
At 4 months old, he won’t be jumping for joy just yet, but I hope my sister will be happy 😊
I always say... Why should I buy something ready-made when I can make it myself in 100 hours for four times the price? 😅
Anyone who appreciates craftsmanship and quality will always be delighted by something homemade. Just think of all the gifts parents receive from their young children. The kids have made things with their own hands at daycare or school and are incredibly proud of them. There’s so much love put into every single item—it simply brings joy to everyone who receives it. And they’re kept and cherished time and time again. My children’s homemade Christmas ornaments—and they have children of their own now—still hang on our Christmas tree today.
Adults also love homemade gifts, as long as they’re just right for them. You have to take the time throughout the year to figure out what the person likes. You need to know the recipient’s favorite color, what they wear, what makes them happy, and what they really don’t like. Just giving something random usually doesn’t spark a wave of joy. But something small and special—handmade with lots of love, just for that one person—that touches the heart. Mine while I’m making it, and the recipient’s when they unwrap it.
If you pay close attention to the people around you, you’ll also know for whom a homemade gift isn’t worth the effort. Those people just get gift cards and can use them to fulfill their own wishes. That’s fine, too—to each their own.
With that in mind, first think about the people you want to give gifts to, and then consider what would make them happy. That’s the standard. It doesn’t have to please you—it has to please them.
giving gifts is an art :- ) In general, I can’t say that homemade gifts are better than store-bought ones. Sometimes I just don’t have the time to crochet something for all my loved ones. That’s why: When given with love, both homemade and store-bought gifts are wonderful.
On the topic of “giving gifts,” the following quote by Joachim Ringelnatz comes to mind:
@Marion,
please don’t copy entire poems into your posts. These works are protected by copyright, and failing to respect that can lead to problems. Thank you for your understanding.
