Dear users, dear authors,
What are some common mistakes in crafting, and how can they be avoided?

Sloppiness and rushing are among the biggest mistakes in handicrafts, no matter what type of project you’re working on. Only by paying close attention and working carefully can you prevent mistakes.

If you don’t do a gauge swatch, the finished piece will be a different size, won’t look like the original, and you’ll use a different amount of yarn.

Another common mistake: poor lighting or not wearing the right glasses to see clearly—mistakes can easily creep in that you won’t notice until the next day in daylight.

When I’m knitting a pattern, mistakes often creep in when my mind wanders and I try to solve a little problem. Before I know it, I’ve lost count and my pattern is off.

Someone once told me that every handmade piece has a mistake somewhere, no matter how small. That’s what makes it special.

I don’t necessarily want to leave it at that. However, I do have to say that when knitting complicated or larger pieces, minor mistakes can happen from time to time. I used to unravel everything because my perfectionism wouldn’t allow anything else. Today I only do that if it’s noticeable or gives a different result than I wanted.

As Ina already mentioned, checking gauge is essential. It’s not worth skipping it! Otherwise, you’ll end up with more work later when you have to unravel it.

It does sometimes happen to me that I knit too many rows when working stripes — and then have to go back. Since I can knit without looking, it also unfortunately happens that a stitch isn’t worked properly. Especially when the yarn is multi-stranded. But I’ve learned from that by now.

Another common mistake can be casting off too tightly, especially on the cuff. Then it doesn’t stretch enough and fits too tightly or doesn’t fit at all. That happened to me recently with a neckband, and I had to unravel it again. Those are learning experiences too

.

Working on a pattern can also have its pitfalls. When joining pieces and weaving in ends, it’s extremely important to work neatly.
I also consider washing and blocking to be essential. I always do this!!!!
Some yarns continue to “stretch” even after washing. Plus, this gives me neat edges and an even stitch pattern.
