Looking for another term

Hi,
in most of my patterns I use kfb for increases.

The increase with kfb
kfb (knit front back) is a term from English knitting patterns. One stitch is doubled by knitting it first through the front and then through the back.

Now I'm wondering whether there is another term for it? Maybe even a German one?

Best regards,
Marion/Wollopus

Marion, I just call it “doubling a stitch” and then explain how to do it. Or “knit the stitch twice—first from the back, then from the front.”

Hi Marion,

In German, I know this as “knitting two stitches from one stitch”; I would briefly explain that in a pattern as well.

Best regards, Sonja

I learned to knit the old-fashioned way, from books and magazines. The internet wasn’t even a thing yet; if you were lucky, there might have been a TV show about knitting or crocheting, or you might have had needlework class in school.
Most of the time, though, you were on your own.
I seem to recall that the explanation was simply “knit two stitches from one.” I don’t consciously remember a corresponding abbreviation.
As I gradually ventured into English patterns over the years, I realized that the abbreviations are often much more logical than the German ones.
For example, the centered decrease—for which we don’t have a proper abbreviation either—is called “sl2k1psso” in English, which stands for “slip 2, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over.”
For us: “Slip two stitches together as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitches over the knitted stitch.”

Ridiculously long... ^^

Hi,
thanks :-)
“Double a stitch” — that sounds logical and nice and short. Of course, an explanation would go with it.
I learned to knit from my mom when I was 5; back then, we didn’t need short terms. I only looked them up later because of the patterns online :-)
Best regards, Marion

I find the abbreviations quite confusing, especially for beginners. If I want to keep it short, a knitting chart with symbols is just as useful. And then I can explain the symbols in detail.
