Making pompoms / pom-poms + using them

Dear users, dear authors,
how do you make pompoms / pom-poms, and what do you use them for?

The easiest way to make pom-poms is with a pom-pom maker, which you can buy at craft stores. All you have to do is follow the instructions.


But you can also cut out two cardboard discs, stack them on top of each other, and wrap yarn around them.
 
Then cut the threads at the edge and slide a strand of yarn between the cardboard discs. Wrap it all the way around, pull it tight, and tie a knot.

Another simple method (especially for small pom-poms) is to wrap the yarn around a fork instead of two cardboard discs. Wrap a strand of yarn around the center, pull it tight, tie a knot, and cut the loops.

Pom-poms can be used as decorations for hats or ties. You can also use them to make cute little animals.

Since I love pom-poms, I’ve naturally made quite a few myself. Ruth has described the most affordable and traditional method very well.

However, if you want to make more—there are 120 of them in my picture, by the way—it’s worth investing in a pom-pom maker. They come in various sizes. That way, all your pom-poms will look the same.
