Handmade Total

I sewed the whole little box by hand yesterday and today; my machines are blocked in and covered up because of the renovation, and I can’t
really get to them right now, so handmade work it is. It was really interesting to see how
long it takes by hand to do something I normally finish within 20–30
minutes on the sewing machine, including cutting. The zipper is sewn in by hand too.

I do have a sewing machine, but I don’t really get along with it very well. When I sew something, I always do it by hand... I even sewed the cushions for our motorhome by hand. I tried using the machine for one cushion cover... but ended up having to rework it by hand anyway...
  I always admire the beautiful things people create with a sewing machine. But sewing a zipper in by hand is a real pain... 

I also sew my cushions by hand; they usually don’t fit under the machine anyway because they’re too thick.
Without my machines, I’d only be half a person ;-) I learned it back in the day—I retrained as an industrial seamstress—and my master seamstress came from a craft background and taught us a lot of things that weren’t exactly in the curriculum, since I originally came from the restaurant industry.

I really should have paid closer attention with my grandma...
She was a needlework teacher and showed me a lot. Back then, when I was 8 or 9 years old, I sewed on her really old machine—the kind you had to pedal with the big flywheel.... sewing worked on that one.... 
So I sewed the cushion covers by hand; I just can’t get a proper seam on my machine 🙄
