Using Stramin // Border?

What exactly is stramin? Is it similar to a crocheted border?

Stramin is a grid-like fabric (usually made of cotton) that is used as a base for embroidery or knotting. Stramin comes in various weights, from fine to coarse. Thanks to the regular pattern of the holes, it’s particularly well-suited for beginners in embroidery.
Stramin itself isn’t decorative; it only becomes so when embroidered or similar. A crocheted border, on the other hand, serves as decoration—as an edging for a cloth, a table runner, or a curtain.

Stramin is a cross-weave fabric that can be more or less tightly woven, usually made of cotton—that is, a fabric with a cross weave. A cross weave is when the weft and warp threads cross each other once. Stramin used to be widely used in schools for needlework because this particular weave makes it very easy to count the threads needed to make, for example, a nice, even cross-stitch. In my opinion, a border has absolutely nothing to do with stramin. A border is a woven band in various weaves; it can be a cross weave, but it can also be a twill weave. A border can just as easily be bobbin-laced, knitted, or crocheted—it depends on what the border is needed for.
