An original, personalized gift that comes from the heart—not just the usual crayons and candy: the crocheted guardian angel for first-graders !
This little keychain is available in versions for girls and boys. Both hold a school cone in their arms and carry a school backpack on their backs. You can open the backpack and put little notes with good wishes, some loose change, or candy inside.

A colorful, fun name sign for a child's room door or a wall in the child's room is just the thing for a child who is just starting to learn to read.

That makes a name sign a lovely and very personal gift for starting school, but of course also for a birth, a christening, or a child's birthday:

To the crochet pattern Name Sign Owl

To the crochet pattern Name Sign Country Road

Both crochet patterns naturally include a complete crochet alphabet, lots of photos, and are very easy to crochet, even for beginners.

This soccer backpack is perfect for daycare, a trip to Grandma’s, or little outings.
A real little eye-catcher and just the thing for young soccer fans.

It measures approximately 27 cm high and 21 cm wide when using the specified hook size and yarn weight.

You will receive a detailed 20-page description with lots of pictures to follow along.
Also included is a chart with the alphabet for a name of your choice.

Still need a matching gift for starting school? How about a pretty pencil case?

They are also perfect for hobby use, for craft supplies such as knitting needles, crochet hooks, scissors, and other little items.

These fun little “leftover eaters” can be filled with small gifts and tucked into the school cone as a surprise. Later on, they can be used as pencil holders on a desk, for example. They’re very easy to crochet and are a perfect way to use up leftover materials—even buttons.

This bag has an adjustable strap and a double bottom. It can be crocheted as a kindergarten bag, but it’s also great to take along on walks. You’ll need good crochet skills and experience for this project.

Schoolchildren—and preschoolers, too—will love these cute pencil toppers, which you can crochet in no time at all using a few leftover yarn scraps. The pencil toppers fit standard pencils and colored pencils. For thicker pencils, simply crochet a few more stitches for the sleeve!
Pencil toppers: Dog, Cat, Mouse

 Pencil toppers: Rabbit, Chick, Lamb

And these pencils can be neatly stored in the “Wasti” pencil case along with a pencil sharpener, eraser, glue stick, and craft scissors. Crochet “Wasti” in its original brown color or in a rainbow of colors—whichever you prefer. This is another great way to use up leftover yarn!

Beginning readers still need quite a long time at first until they have finished reading a book. That makes them all the happier to have a funny bookmark, so they know where they left off last time!

You can crochet bookmarks wonderfully from leftover yarn. I recommend fairly thin yarn so the bookmark doesn’t make the book too bulky.

Here’s a small selection:

Frog King Bookmark

Crochet Pattern for a Storage Basket

Here, you’ll crochet around a can or jar in spiral rounds. This way, pencils, rulers, and glue will have their own spot on the desk.

This gym bag, knitted in double knitting, is a unique gift for starting school or kindergarten. The detailed pattern includes templates for the schoolgirl and schoolboy, as well as a template for the complete ABC if you’d like to knit the child’s name into it.

The great thing about homemade gift wrapping is that you can easily customize it to suit any color preference. And if the child starting school is currently into pink and fuchsia, then they can get their gifts in a pink school satchel !

This school satchel is made from cardstock, measures approximately 16.5 x 22.5 x 9 cm, and is very easy to make—in a detailed, illustrated craft tutorial, I’ll show you step by step how to do it.

You’re already talking about the start of school again—here in Bavaria, we just got our report cards today :-)

People just need some lead time to recreate the items.
They’re not all as fast as you are, Akela. :-) I think it’s great when you start threads to showcase your handiwork on the forum.

@Akela, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the new school year starts in one week; in Berlin and Brandenburg, in two weeks. For them, this thread is almost too late already :-).

For all impatient first-graders, I’ve created this countdown calendar. It works just like an Advent calendar, but is designed for 30 days. Hidden under the tip of the pencil is a box for colored pencils, paintbrushes, and similar items.

The calendar is made of photo cardstock and measures approximately 14 x 29 x 16 cm. With a little crafting experience, it’s easy to recreate, but you definitely need to cut and glue very precisely.

I wasn’t sure how things would go with the start of school and the coronavirus, so I’m only posting this thread now.
But there should definitely be enough time for a few small projects, perhaps even using leftover yarn.

@Josefa, that wasn’t criticism, just an observation in response to Akela’s comment.

This colorful explosion box is perfect for starting school and includes removable cards for keepsake photos from preschool, good wishes, short poems on the theme, or similar. You can put a very small gift, a banknote, or a few coins in the school satchel and the school cone.

If you scatter a few sweets around the satchel and cone, the box will “explode” even more beautifully and the surprise will be perfect!

The explosion box is mainly made of photo cardstock and measures approx. 17 x 8 x 9.6 cm. It’s very easy to make and requires no special prior knowledge.

When the big start at kindergarten comes, your child needs a kindergarten bag as individual and original as they are :). As a mother of four children, I put all my knowledge about the requirements for kindergarten bags into developing this sewing pattern.

The KÄFERLEI kindergarten bagN in brief:

... room for a lunch box, water bottle, and friendship book
... secret compartment
... three versions you can sew (with a double, single, or no bag flap)
... with key finder
... with adjustable strap
... with name pocket

Here is the sewing pattern for the kindergarten bag.
