Overcoming Everyday Challenges

Dear users, dear authors,
We often have users and authors who stop posting because they’re too busy with their daily lives or believe that sharing their everyday challenges or stories about what’s going on in their lives would be a nuisance to the forum.

We have a community here in the forum that, of course, often revolves around crafts, but everyone has their own set of challenges to deal with. In my opinion, a vibrant forum always includes the opportunity to talk about current everyday challenges.

So if something is on your mind, talk about it, start a thread, or write it down.

@Everyone who only wants to talk about crafts and not about everyday life:
Please be understanding. Maybe you’ll need a listening ear someday, too.

Hi Josefa!
That really speaks to me right now. Unfortunately, I don’t have any time for crafts at the moment, and I’m rarely here on the forum because I’m completely swamped. We bought an old house that needs to be completely renovated. The house we’re currently renting is scheduled to be torn down next year, so we have a six-month window to finish the “new” house. We’re a family of handypeople, and with the help of a few friends, we’re doing almost everything ourselves—which means that, in addition to our day jobs, we spend every free minute on the construction site. On top of that, we’re currently dealing with the COVID-19 crisis and homeschooling. So in the mornings, in addition to my household chores, I have to make sure our daughter completes her schoolwork. Then I head to the construction site at noon, and from around 5:00 p.m. until late in the evening, I have to work (in the kitchen at a restaurant).
I stop by here once a day to catch up on what’s new and see if customers have any questions about my patterns (so far, I haven’t received any questions, which I think is very positive—apparently, everything is easy to understand). I hope that starting early next year, I’ll be able to be here more often to actively participate in the forum and write new patterns again ;)

For me, it’s a daily struggle that I can no longer do everything I used to do—even washing doors or cleaning windows is a challenge. A damaged spine, two knee replacements—I can’t even climb onto a stool anymore without fearing I’ll fall. We’re currently painting the doors in our home—this is the kind of work where I can only stand by and let my husband do everything on his own. I have osteoarthritis in the thumb joints of both hands, which is why I can no longer hold a crochet hook; knitting is still possible, at least that much. I can walk with a walker, but standing still is so painful that I feel like I’m going to break right in the middle. Without my sewing machines and crafts in general, I’d probably have ended up in the loony bin a long time ago ;-) :-) It keeps taking my mind off things and gives me new courage to face life, because despite everything, I plan to live to at least 90—I’m just shy of 69 now.

Dear Josefa,

Thank you so much for starting this thread for us. I think you’ve spoken from the heart for many people. Yes, crafts connect all of us here on CP, but beyond that we’re all people with worries and troubles too. And being able to let that out sometimes is a freeing feeling. It’s not complaining; it’s a very personal piece of our lives.

Most people—I’m one of them—withdraw when they have worries. But when you open up and talk about it, you have the chance to receive understanding, comfort, or encouragement. Then you don’t feel so alone with the problem. Worries are easier to carry together; maybe one person or another also has a good tip that you would never have thought of on your own.

@Nadeleule
Of course you’re under a lot of pressure because the house you bought has to be finished. And every day has only 24 hours, and nothing else can come up. Household chores, schooling your child, the construction site, your job. You really have to take good care of your health, because your workload is exhausting. You’re not alone, of course; your family is working just as hard alongside you. But I do believe you that there’s a lot of weight on your shoulders right now. Maybe you can treat yourself now and then to some time just for yourself, to recharge your strength. The new house doesn’t have to be perfectly finished; in a pinch, a dry place for everyone to sleep, a kitchen, and a bathroom are enough. You still have the rest of your lives for everything else.

@Akela
Yes, health problems can really wear you down. In the past, you always imagined all the things you’d do when you were older. And in reality it looks completely different. Somehow you have to learn to live with the things that can’t be changed. It’s good that you still have your sewing machines, the embroidery machine, and your crafts. They can help distract you. The body can’t think positively and negatively at the same time. New ideas occupy your brain in a positive way, and trying things out and putting them into practice keeps your fingers busy. So keep coming up with so many beautiful things! I always love looking at them and admire your sewing talent. Hopefully your doctor has adjusted your pain medication well. There are pain clinics that specialize in that.

@Schnuckelina
Yes, I was actually going to tell you all something about myself now, but my left hand hurts after all the writing. I’ll check in again later.

I wish all readers of this thread an especially lovely weekend. Just enjoy whatever you can!

Best wishes - Ina

It’s me again. I just need to briefly explain what’s going on with me right now.

Yes, my left hand isn’t fully functional anymore after a complicated wrist fracture three months ago. I can move my fingers, but I can’t rotate my hand. And my arm and shoulder are affected too, and they’re hurting by now as well. The whole thing was caused by medical malpractice—either during the surgery or during follow-up care, due to a cast that was too tight. No one wants to take responsibility for it.

Next week I have an appointment with a surgeon at a different hospital. I hope she’ll examine it thoroughly and, ideally, see treatment options for improvement.

Thanks for “listening.”

Oh, then I wish you a very good surgeon who can fix that.
