Crocheting a summer blanket from a yarn cake

Hi,
I’d like to crochet a light summer blanket using a yarn cake. The pattern consists mainly of groups of double crochets, but I’m not limited to that. The yarn cake is 3-ply. Since I’ve never worked with yarn cakes before, I’m a bit at a loss—the yarn is actually quite thin, so the pattern doesn’t show up very well, and all the stitches are really loose (I’ve already tried several hook sizes). I’m starting to wonder if a yarn cake is even suitable for a blanket at all, or if it’s really “just” for a shawl (though even that isn’t always small).
Any tips are welcome.

Personally, I crochet pretty much everything with bobbles: tops, jackets, tablecloths, kids’ clothes, and even blankets. For blankets, though, I never use fewer than 4 strands; otherwise, it gets too thin for my taste and isn’t cozy enough.
3 strands is great for shawls, tablecloths, or summer clothes.....

I’m currently working on a tablecloth with a 4-strand yarn cake.
I can hardly imagine using a 3-strand one in this case, which may also be because I crochet relatively loosely.
For a 4-strand yarn cake, I usually use a 3 mm hook—less often 3.5 mm.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I chose the wrong bobble yarn weight after all. I thought 3-ply meant lighter/thinner for a summer blanket 🙈

Crazy idea: Could I crochet with 2 Bobbel held together? In other words, 2 x 3-strand Bobbel, so the yarn becomes 6-strand and therefore thicker?
I’m out of ideas for what else I could make from the Bobbel—they were meant to be a blanket, after all...
