Helloooo!!!: )
I'm new here and really want to finally start knitting. I bought myself a knitting kit with a pattern.

Now I don't understand a thing in the pattern?!🤷🏻‍♀️😅
What exactly do these abbreviations stand for?

—————————————————

Pattern I:
N needle size 15: k1, p1.

Gauge: Pattern I, N needle size 15:
8 sts = 10 cm wide
11 rows = 10 cm high

Instructions:
CO 21 sts. Knit in Pattern I. At approx. 52 cm from the cast-on edge (when the ball of yarn has been used up), sew the sts to the cast-on edge.

—————————————————

could someone please please please help me?
I would be sooo grateful : ) )

thank you very much and best wishes
Sam

Hi Sam,

actually, the pattern should also include an explanation of the abbreviations...

M = stitch
re = knit
li = purl
N Nr = needle number (size or thickness of the knitting needle)
R = row(s)
Anschl. = cast-on

I hope this helps.

Best regards
Michaela

Pattern I: Needle size 15: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch

Gauge: Pattern I, needle size 15:
8 stitches = 10 cm wide
11 rows = 10 cm high

Instructions:
Cast on 21 stitches. Knit in Pattern I. When the piece measures about 52 cm from the cast-on edge (when the skein is used up), sew the stitches to the cast-on edge.

On second glance, the needle size seems odd to me.
If it’s actually the needle size, then that would be a very thick needle....

With 8 stitches and 11 rows, I can already picture a thick needle.

A size 15 in the U.S. corresponds to a 10 mm needle. Could that be right?

If it’s a set, then maybe that’s the name of the needle and not the size or gauge at all?

Are stitches something different from a cast-on? Hmm... I really have no idea how to start right now. Oh my gosh :( But I don’t think I’m too dumb for this😅

Can someone maybe explain to me step by step how I need to start and continue??! And maybe even feel like helping? 😳

So... I’ve started.
I don’t know if this is right or if I understood it correctly...

  I’ve cast on 21 stitches....
It looks like this now (picture)

But now what? What do I do next???? Do I have to slide the 21 stitches over to the other needle?
And then? How exactly do I continue?😅🙈

(THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance for the answers!!)

Okay, now I’m totally confused😅

Do I need to cast on 21 stitches? Or 8???! Or what does “gauge” mean? Are the 8 stitches just for testing, and do I actually need to cast on 21 stitches to knit this scarf???

🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m really sorry for my confusion... as you can see, I’m a total beginner😂

Hi,
It would probably be best if you contacted the author or publisher of your pattern. If it’s a pattern from Crazypatterns, you can contact the author directly via private message.

Hey :)

8 stitches and 11 rows is the gauge. You need this to determine whether 8 stitches and 11 rows—using your needles, your yarn, and your knitting style—will actually measure 10x10 cm.

For this pattern, you need to cast on 21 stitches, then knit 52 cm in the pattern (alternating one knit stitch and one purl stitch). After that, if I understand correctly, you’re supposed to sew the finishing edge to the starting edge.

To learn how to knit in general, I recommend YouTube :)

I hope this helps a little.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes—I’m on my phone and don’t pay attention to capitalization.

Hey!!!! :) Ohh thank you so much!!! I’m slowly getting the hang of it now :))

But one more question: what do you mean by one purl and one knit????? I need to have all 21 stitches on one needle, right? And then turn the needle, I saw, and then start knitting...

So what do you mean by one purl and one knit?😅 Do you maybe have a picture of it or something? So I can understand it visually??🙈😳☺️

Thank you so much!!!!

Have you ever knitted before, Yourzzzsam?

I think a knitting course for beginners on YouTube or with the help of a book—whichever you’re more comfortable with—would be helpful.

Knit and purl stitches are basic stitches that are worked differently.
For knit stitches, the yarn is behind the work; for purl stitches, it’s in front of the work.

Hi Sam

Here on the Velana-Creations blog, there are several guides for learning to knit, even with pictures.
.
For example:
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/blog/1245/stricken-lernen-linke-maschen-stricken

Knit stitches and casting on are also explained on the blog. Maybe that will help you.
