We like Halloween. The kids are already looking forward to going out in costume in the evening. When they get back, we’ll enjoy some delicious raclette together and wind down the evening.
Halloween wasn’t part of my youth, and I can’t really relate to it. I also remember that it only became popular here in the early ’90s—probably pushed by the Carnival industry, which wasn’t doing much business during Carnival because of the Second Gulf War; nobody was in the mood for Carnival back then.
But my grandchildren love Halloween—what kid doesn’t like to dress up? So now I’m looking forward to Halloween with them too, and I’m designing spooky costumes and decorations for them.
Well, I don’t really get into Halloween either.
I do crochet pumpkins or little Halloween dolls as small decorations, but that’s about it.
Here, too, kids in costumes roam the streets and ring doorbells everywhere. Of course, we buy a little candy for the kids when they come by. Last year, nobody came, so we got to eat it all ourselves.
You don’t have to “go along with” everything, after all.
I feel the same way as the previous speakers—I don’t really get into Halloween either. It’s probably fun for kids and teens, but I prefer the traditional “All Saints’ Day/All Souls’ Day” that’s common here, where we also visit the cemetery and honor the dead.
I agree with Sofi. Last fall we were in America and got to “admire” the wildest and creepiest decorations, some of which we found pretty off-putting. My grandchildren love to go trick-or-treating around the neighborhood in costume and come home with mountains of candy, and sometimes the neighborhood kids in costume ring our doorbell. I’ve even crocheted bats and a ghost for the grandchildren.
I really like the sometimes very quirky Halloween decorations; if I had the chance to make my front yard spooky, I’d jump at the chance.
We’ve also had the chance to experience the decorations in person in the U.S. and thought they were great—many people had lit-up pumpkins or ghost decorations. Since it gets dark early this time of year, that creates (for me, at least...) a really cozy atmosphere.
Maybe I’m just a bit morbid by nature.
Here, just like every year on TV, you can really tell that fall is coming from all the horror movies they’re airing—which I think are totally stupid.
