Merino wool without animal cruelty

Hello, dear community,

We all do handicrafts, often with merino yarn too. However, many merino yarns are produced under suffering for the merino sheep; the keyword is “mulesing.”

Since we all want to pursue our favorite hobby with a clear conscience, I had the idea that we could compile a list here of all yarn manufacturers that are guaranteed/certified to work without mulesing.

So far, I’ve found the following yarn manufacturers:

Anton, that’s a great idea, and I’ve already added the thread to my bookmarks. Thanks for that!

I’m actually very mindful of this myself and make a point of buying wool from sources where the sheep are treated well… Because I don’t like it when animals have to suffer.

I wasn’t familiar with some of the brands listed.

Unfortunately, I still have some wool in stock or that was given to me where I can no longer trace the production. Of course, I’ll still use it up.

For the past two years, my go-to sources have been Finkhof and Drops. By the way, they also carry recycled cotton in great colors.

Good morning—since I live near the “Schachenmayr” warehouse outlet, I naturally noticed this supplier was missing from the list and immediately searched for it on Google.

I found a report stating that Schachenmayr assures it processes only mulesing-free raw wool and expects its suppliers to treat nature and living creatures with respect.

I saved the article as well; maybe we can add to it with other tips on what to look out for. 

I think this is a very helpful post. It’s great that we’re compiling a list of these exemplary producers here. I can’t add anything new right now, though, because my favorite suppliers/producers are already on the list (Fair Alpaca, Atelier Zitron, and Drops Design).
