Little girls’ favorite colors?

Hi everyone,

I want to design little doll beds . That means I’m already hard at work on it. Now it’s time to decide on the color scheme. My question is for the moms and grandmas among you.

Imagine you’re all together in a toy store with an entire shelf full of doll beds. All the beds look exactly the same in shape and come with color-coordinated bedding. Each bed is a different color.

Which colors would the girls choose? And which colors are a total no-go?
And does it always have to be pink?

Thank you so much for your answers.

Warm regards from Ina

When my daughter was 4–6 years old, she was totally into every shade of pink (even though she was raised in a fairly gender-neutral way); later, in elementary school, everything had to be turquoise. But she also liked light blue, light green, yellow, and orange.
Where I’m from, 50 years ago nobody even talked about girls liking pink, and yet I remember that when I was 3–4 years old, I couldn’t get enough of a certain shade of pink. So I definitely wouldn’t leave out pink—it really does seem to be a genetic thing :-).

One of my granddaughters likes green.
The other two like pink.

Sorry, that’s not really going to help you...
My grandniece had her First Communion today and really wants to repaint her room—right now she has pink walls. She says pink for girls is out because guys are wearing it now—it’s a guy’s color now, she said....
She wants green now, like nature, which needs to be protected...
I thought that was soooooo cute!

My daughter went through a “pink phase” when she was a toddler.

I’ve loved bold shades of red for as long as I can remember.

Hi everyone,

thank you so much for your comments. I figured it would come down to pink. Inna’s probably right—it must be genetic. Or maybe little girls are automatically programmed to like pink because everything around them is in that shade. Luckily, we have more freedom in our choices later on; otherwise, all women today would still be into pink. By the way, my favorite color—at least right now—is a really beautiful green.

Thank you so much for your input. You’ve confirmed my hunch. You can’t do without pink. The pink bed in my imaginary store would be the first to sell out.

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday evening.
Warm regards—Ina

Personally, as a kid, you could have chased me away with pink... Absolutely awful! I loved green.

I don’t think the whole pink thing is genetic... It’s more something that’s learned. Not necessarily from parents, but rather from the environment, the media... Pink is just a girl’s color, and a lot of things for girls automatically come in pink... Especially today... I don’t think it was like that 20 years ago, but somehow in some shops you can almost only find "girls’ clothes" (always in pink...) and "boys’ clothes" (with diggers, tractors, etc.) in some stores.

Anyway... I think that’s why so many, many girls are simply into pink...

And something else that has also been fashionable among girls for a few years now: Elsa blue ;)

@Krea_Tina,
I tend to think that at some point someone noticed that most little girls like pink and then used this phenomenon for their products, and others copied him.
Now, I agree with you there, girls are almost being pushed into liking pink. But it wasn't always like that.
From my observations, most toddlers of both genders actually like pink, but with boys it isn't looked upon favorably when they choose a "girl color," so they often pretend to like another color.

Your great-niece observed that well: I’m also seeing more and more men—though mostly sporty types—confidently wearing pink dress shirts. In the past, that was a complete no-go; men simply didn’t wear that. And today it’s considered stylish, modern, progressive, and unconventional.

For as long as I can remember, people have chosen pink clothes for little girls and blue for little boys. But as I once read, 100 years ago it was exactly the opposite—boys wore pink and girls wore blue! But when sailor suits became fashionable, blue became the color for boys.
In that respect, I also believe that this thing with pink is learned, perhaps not from parents, but from society. If you want to buy a little dress today, you can hardly find anything other than pink! And since people now find out during pregnancy which sex the child will be, they buy clothes specifically for that gender right away.(When I was expecting my children, that still wasn’t known in advance, so I bought them very colorful onesies: orange, brown, green, yellow - just no pink or blue! You can’t get things like that anymore these days!)
So girls are conditioned to pink from a very young age.
At some point during early childhood, children begin to identify strongly with their gender, and for boys, “girl stuff” is of course impossible - and vice versa! And what could show more clearly that you’re a girl than the color pink?
When you get older, you probably don’t need that as much anymore and can wear other colors too.
By the way, I’ve always found turquoise especially beautiful!

It really bugs me when I look at baby and toddler clothes: almost nothing but pink, fuchsia, and at most purple for the girls (preferably with Hello Kitty on them, too!)… For boys, the color palette is wider, but then there are the “typically masculine” designs on them: cars, tractors, fire trucks, or something like that… Luckily, we can knit, crochet, and sew…

My daughter always loved pink and purple. Now she’s turned 6 and wants everything in turquoise or mint ;-)
She even picked out a turquoise school backpack.

Thank you so much for your responses. I’m glad to see that there are other favorite colors besides pink. This weekend, we’re having a couple over who are bringing their 5-year-old granddaughter, Sophie. Then I’ll get to test this out in person. The pink one is drying right now. Unfortunately, turquoise isn’t available in spray form. But a light green one is finished too.
