Recently I’ve only been knitting the heart heel. It’s similar to the heel flap and turn, but in my opinion it fits the foot (the heel) better.
According to my pattern book, it goes as follows:
Heart Heel
The heart heel is worked back and forth in stockinette stitch over the stitches on needles 1 and 4 (I still make it reinforced). It has a wider sole area than the heel flap and turn.
First, for the heel flap, knit 2 rows fewer than there are stitches on the two needles, always knitting the 1st and last stitch (= edge stitches) in both right side and wrong side rows. To emphasize the edges of the heel flap, the first and last 2 or 3 stitches can also always be knitted.
Now the heart is knitted from the center outward over the stitches of the heel flap. Start in the center of the heel with a right side row.
Row 1 (right side row): Knit the 1st stitch, knit 2 stitches together through the back loop, knit 1 stitch, turn.
Row 2 (wrong side row): Slip the 1st stitch purlwise, purl 3 stitches, purl 2 stitches together, purl 1 stitch, turn.
Row 3 (right side row): Slip the 1st stitch knitwise, knit 4 stitches up to before the slipped stitch of the previous row, knit 2 stitches together through the back loop, knit 1 stitch, turn.
Row 4 (wrong side row): Slip the first stitch purlwise, purl 5 stitches up to before the slipped stitch of the previous row, purl 2 stitches together, purl 1 stitch, turn.
Continue this until all stitches of the heel flap have been worked.
After the heart, continue working in the round in stockinette stitch or as indicated, and in the 1st round pick up 1 stitch from every 2nd row along the side edges of the heel flap, plus 1 additional stitch between heel and instep. Needles 2 and 3 have the same number of stitches as before starting the heel; the remaining stitches are divided equally between needles 1 and 4. Knit 1 more round over all stitches. Then work the gusset decreases as for the heel flap and turn.
In my experience, you have more stitches on the needle than with the heel flap and turn. You would need to decrease correspondingly more at the gusset.
I hope that was understandable. If necessary, I could scan the page and email it to you. For that I would need your email address by PM, though. (Of course this also applies to anyone else who is interested.)
Best, Petra
