Sewing Crochet Pieces onto Knitted Fabric

What’s the best way to sew crochet appliqués onto a knitted children’s jacket? Should I use the same yarn as the knitted or crocheted piece, and should I use a hem stitch or a running stitch? Does anyone have any experience or tips on this? Thanks.

Hello Christina

For sewing on appliqués, I usually use the original yarn, because the stitches show the least that way. If it’s too thick, I split the strands. Sewing thread also works; you just have to try it and see which you like better.

I either use backstitches or simply stitch through at the edge.
Here’s a picture; you can hardly see any thread from sewing it on.

Christina, I’ll show you how to do this using a crocheted piece as an example. It works the same way for knitted items.

I insert the needle along the edges using the same yarn—first at the bottom, then at the top, and so on—using a very simple stitch. You won’t be able to see it later, and it holds up well through washing.

Thanks, Monika. Do you stitch all the way through the underlying knitted piece or just into the stitches? (It probably works better with a crocheted base than with a knitted one.)

I stitch all the way through. With thinner yarn, I alternate between stitching into the edge of the appliqué and, for example, the edge of the knitted piece. If you sew it on with the same yarn, it won’t be noticeable.
