Beginner

Hi everyone,

even though my profile picture might suggest otherwise, I’m a 26-year-old guy who loves to cook. I work in customer service and would like to learn how to crochet for various reasons. I bought a pattern and have a few questions about it. I can do the techniques myself or watch video tutorials. Now, I have a question about understanding the pattern. The image below shows the instructions for a reversible beanie. I need size XL. How do I start... do I chain 3, then make a ring, and then work double crochet or half double crochet? I’d appreciate a quick explanation...

So, the way I read it, you’re not supposed to join it into a ring yet; turning chain means that you turn your work. 
The ring will probably only be joined in the second round, which is also easier because the foundation chain can easily get twisted. So you make 112 chain stitches and then crochet back along the row into the 3rd stitch from the hook.
