Vacation at last! Your suitcase is packed, your to-do list has disappeared, and instead of appointments, your days are filled with sunshine, the sound of the sea, or birdsong. For many people, a good book is an essential part of a relaxing holiday. Whether you're at the beach, on the balcony, in the garden, by the lake, or enjoying the comfort of a camper van, now there's finally time to immerse yourself in captivating stories.

And honestly, is there anything better than curling up with a good book and forgetting the world around you for a while? One moment you're following a detective on the hunt for a criminal, the next you're traveling through distant countries or getting lost in a heartwarming romance. Books have a wonderful way of taking us to places we sometimes never want to leave.

To make sure you can quickly find the right page again after a coffee break, a refreshing swim, or an ice cream on the beach promenade, a bookmark is a must. Even better if it's not only practical but also handmade.

After sharing my first simple crochet reading tassel bookmark, I have since designed two more versions. They're just as quick and easy to crochet but feature different stitch patterns that add a charming touch between the pages of your favorite book. They use only small amounts of yarn, making them perfect stash-busting projects. Why not crochet several—one for yourself and a few as thoughtful little gifts for fellow book lovers?

These two new reading tassels are also excellent beginner-friendly projects. The stitch patterns are easy to follow, the projects work up quickly, and you'll enjoy a satisfying result in no time. They're exactly what you want for a relaxing vacation: no endless counting, no complicated stitch patterns, and definitely no UFOs (unfinished objects) waiting sadly in your project bag when your holiday comes to an end. That leaves more time for what really matters—relaxation, great books, and a few cozy crochet moments.

One of the best things about these reading tassels is that they take up almost no room in your luggage. Just pack a crochet hook and a small ball of yarn, and you can make them wherever you are—on the patio, in a camping chair, or during a relaxing train journey to your holiday destination. You might even finish a thoughtful little gift for someone special along the way.

Below you'll find the free crochet patterns for Reading Tassel No. 2 and Reading Tassel No. 3. I hope you enjoy making them, and I wish you many peaceful hours with your crochet hook and a wonderful book.

Because sometimes the most beautiful vacation memories are the simplest ones: a cozy spot in the shade, a captivating story, a handmade crochet reading tassel tucked between the pages of a book, and the feeling that, for just a moment, time stands still.

Crochet Pattern for Bookmark "Reading Tassel No. 2"

For Reading Tassel No. 2, you'll need the same materials as for Reading Tassel No. 1. This bookmark is also suitable for beginners.

Materials

  • Fine cotton yarn or a cotton blend, for example Strickgarn Wien (Belday Home), 490 m (536 yds) per 200 g (7 oz)
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends

Alternatively, you can use any other lightweight yarn.

Finished Size

The finished bookmark measures approximately 5 cm (2 in) wide and 20 cm (8 in) long without the tassels, or approximately 24 cm (9½ in) long including the tassels.

Instructions

Work according to Crochet Chart II.

Like Reading Tassel No. 1, this bookmark is worked as a rectangle, so there are no increases or decreases. Each row begins with 3 turning chains, and the work is turned at the end of every row.

Adding the Tassels

Cut one strand of yarn for each tassel, making each strand twice the desired finished tassel length.

Fold a strand in half. Using your crochet hook, pull the folded loop through a stitch along the lower edge of the bookmark from back to front. Then pull the two loose ends through the loop and tighten gently to secure the tassel.

Repeat this process, attaching as many tassels as you like evenly across the lower edge of the bookmark.

Finally, trim the tassels with scissors to your desired length.

A Personal Note

If you've read this far, I'd like to leave you with a few final words.
