Free Crochet Pattern for Reindeer

SUPPLIES

cotton yarn (e.g. Schachenmayr Catania 125m/50g) in two colors: brown and green, a bit of red for the nose, dark brown and black, crochet hook 3 mm, Polyester fiberfill stuffing, 2 buttons, scissors, yarn needle.

The ready amigurumi is approx. 24 cm, can be made bigger or smaller depending on the yarn and hook you use.

Ch =chain

St = stitch

Sc =single crochet

Sl st = slip stitch

dec = decrease stitch (two single crochets together)

inc = increase stitch (two single crochets into one stitch)

Rnd = Round

TIPPS

• Do not join rounds, work in a continuous spiral.
• Use a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark the end or the beginning of a round
• All stitches are worked into both loops, unless stated otherwise in the pattern.
• Amigurumi can be made in any desired colours.

Seamsless way of changing color when working in the round

Pick up the new color at the end of the round: inset your hook into the stitch, yarn over the new color and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook to complete the stitch.

SHIFT STITCH

Sometimes during a work of the spiral amigurumi, you need to keep the work symmetrically. As work tends to twist to the right you need to adjust position of the marker periodically (beginning of the round).

Shift stitch is an extra stitch you work at the end of a round to make your work look symmetrical. If you notice that marker moves right, you need to work one extra stitch in the end of the round and move marker for one stitch (now 2nd st of the round becomes 1st). this is shift stitch.

The shift stitch is not included in the round description. To check if it’s time to work shift stitch fold your work in half and check if marker still goes straight or use a yarn that marks a straight line.

You may think this is a increase, but it isn’t. This way you don’t increase or decrease the amount of stitches. The stitches count remains the same.

INSTRUCTIONS

LEG (2x)

Start with darkbrown color yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12 stitches)

Rnd 3: *sc in each of next 3 sts, inc* (15 stitches)

Rnd 4-5: sc in each of next 15 stitches 

Change the color

Rnd 6 (working into the back loop): sc in each of next 15 stitches

Rnd 7: *sc in each of next 4 sts, inc* (18 stitches)

Rnd 8-9: sc in each of next 18 stitches

Rnd 10: *sc in each of next 5 sts, inc* (21 stitches)

Rnd 11-15: sc in each of next 21 stitches

Bind off. Work the second leg the same way but don´t cast off.

BODY

Continue crocheting in rounds:

Rnd 16: chain 5 stitches, work one round over both legs (21 stitches  of the first leg, sc in each of next 5 sts, 21 stitches of the second leg)

Rnd 17: sc in each of next 15 sts, inc, sc in each of next 25 sts, inc, sc in each of next 10 sts (54 stitches)

Rnd 18: sc in each of next 54 stitches

Rnd 19: sc in each of next 16 sts, inc, sc in each of next 26 sts, inc, sc in each of next 10 sts (56 stitches)

Rnd 20-23: sc in each of next 56 stitches

Rnd 24: sc in each of next 14 sts, dec, sc in next st, dec, sc in each of next 23 sts, dec, sc in next st, dec, sc in each of next 9 sts (52 stitches)

BIG BRANCH

Stuff the branch firmly.

Rnd 13:  *dec, sc into the next stitch* (9 stitches)

Rnd 14: sc in each of next 9 stitches

Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing.

LITTLE BRANCH

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12 stitches)

Rnd 3-7: sc in each of next 12 stitches

Stuff the branch firmly. Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew little brach on the big brach. Work the second antler the same way.

MUZZLE

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12 stitches)

Rnd 3: *sc in next st, inc* (18 stitches)

Rnd 4-5: sc in each of next 18 stitches

Rnd 6: *sc in each of next 2 sts, inc* (24 stitches)

EAR (2x)

Rnd 1: 6 sc into Magic Ring

Rnd 2: *inc, sc in next st* (9 stitches)

Rnd 3: *sc in each of next 2 sts, inc* (12 stitches)

Rnd 4: *sc in each of next 3 sts, inc* (15 stitches)

Rnd 5-9: sc in each of next 15 stitches

Rnd 10: *dec, sc in each of next 2 sts* (12 stitches)

Rnd 12: *dec* 6 times.

Bind off leaving a long tail for sewing. Work the second ear the same way.

PANTS

Work with green color yarn.

Front Post Double Crochet:

Yarn over, insert your hook between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches

Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch. You now have 3 loops on the hook

Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice. 

One front post double crochet (FP dc) is complete.

LEGS

Cast on 25 stitches and  joing for crocheting in rounds.

Rounds 1-4: hdc in each of next 25 stitches, slip stitch.

Cast off. Work the second leg the same way but don´t cast off!

Rnd 1: chain 5 stitches, work one round in hdc over both legs (25 stitches of the first leg, dc in each of next 5 sts, 25 stitches of the second leg)

Rnd 2: hdc in each of next 60 stitches

Rnd 3: hdc in each of next 15 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 25 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 10 sts (56 stitches)

Rnd 4-5: hdc in each of next 56 stitches

Rnd 6: hdc in each of next 14 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 23 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 9 sts (52 stitches)

Rnd 7: hdc in each of next 52 stitches

Rnd 8: hdc in each of next 13 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 21 sts, dec, hdc in next st, dec, hdc in each of next 8 sts (48 stitches)

Rnd 9: hdc in each of next 48 stitches

Rnd 10-12: chain 3 stitches, *1 fpdc, 1 dc*, repeat from* to* till the end of the round.

STRAP

For the strap chain 38 stitches, dc in the 4th stitch from hook and each of next 34 stitches.

Bind off. Weave in all ends. Attach two buttons to the pants. Embroider snowflakes with white color yarn.

ASSEMBLY

Sew arms to the body.

Sew the muzzle on the head. Embroider nose with red color yarn. 

Embroider eyes contours, also eyebrows and mouth if desired.

Position antlers and sew them to the head of the reindeer. 

Position ears and sew them to the head of the reindeer. Weave in all ends.
