Winding yarn

Hi! I have a question!

I’ve started winding gradient yarn. Now I’m stuck on the math???? If I have 1,000 chain stitches, want to use 3 colors, and it’s supposed to be 4-ply as well. How do I figure out where to tie the knots? For example, if I want to make a shawl, I’ll need different spacing because the shawl gets bigger. Or do I always use the same spacing when tying the knots? Please help me????????????

I don’t want to make myself unpopular, but I’ll answer anyway.

You can also crochet a shawl using a regular winding method, or you can make a special shawl winding.

Since most people who tinker with these shawl windings probably make a living from it, it’s unlikely you’ll find anyone willing to share their method for it.

  I’m sorry—that’s probably not the answer you were hoping for.
But maybe someone else will come forward after all.
