Sewing a Zipper into Knitwear

Hi everyone,
I made a really thick, cozy knitted coat for my granddaughter. Now my question:
Has anyone ever sewn a zipper into knitted items with a sewing machine??
I failed miserably and then sewed it in by hand, because my machines didn’t feed the thick knitted fabric properly and pulled threads.
Can anyone give me some tips???

Hi,
when sewing in the zipper, sew a strip of tissue paper along the top and bottom—that should help with feeding the fabric. The paper strips can then be easily peeled off.
This method is used for thin, slippery fabrics and should also work for woolen items.
