Crocheted bikinis/swimsuits: yes or no?

Dear users, dear authors,
is this your “thing”? Crocheted bikinis / swimsuits? Or maybe you prefer knitted ones, or perhaps sewn ones? :- )

My sister once crocheted herself a bikini. It looked great—until she went into the water. That’s when everything started to “stretch out a bit” and go its own way.
I’d recommend working elastic bands into the design. :)

There are some really, really beautiful crocheted bikinis and swimsuits out there.

However, I haven’t felt confident enough to try making one myself yet.... They really have to turn out perfectly!
Plus, as has already been mentioned, you have to make sure it stays secure so you don’t come out of the water naked :)

But it’s more for wearing around than for swimming.

I also think crocheted swimsuits or bikinis are better suited for sunbathing than for swimming. Because aside from the fact that they easily lose their shape, they also dry extremely slowly.
That wouldn’t be for me anyway. To wear something like that, you have to be young and fit. Unfortunately, that no longer applies to me :-(

I really like them when I see them around. I’m not sure if I’d wear one myself. Well, if it stays in place well, then sure.
I don’t really like going in the water—I’m not a good swimmer. So getting wet wouldn’t really be that much of an issue. But for the beach, under a big beach umbrella—I could definitely see myself wearing one.

But if I were to crochet something myself, it would probably be a tunic that I could just throw over my bikini.

I actually think they’re only suitable for dolls—even though there are some very pretty designs out there, which I’d still classify as impractical for the reasons I’ve already mentioned. In any case, they’re definitely only for very young, slender women under a sun umbrella!

I totally agree with Ruth! My 15-year-old daughter looks super cute in that crocheted bikini top and shorts. But she’s young and fit ;-) In my opinion, they’re not great for the water.

So, have you changed your mind about this?
Who’s given it a try?
