Difference between a Bobbel and gradient yarn?

is there actually a difference between Bobbel yarn cakes and gradient yarn?

Gradient yarn doesn’t necessarily have to be a bobbel :)
And a bobbel doesn’t necessarily have to be gradient yarn ..... grin

Gradient yarn refers to yarns with a color gradient, and the color gradients can vary a lot, from the number of colors to short and long color transitions.
If it isn’t a bobbel, it’s a yarn that is dyed accordingly by the manufacturer.

Bobbels are usually gradient yarns, but there are also solid-colored bobbels. With bobbels, the color gradients are not dyed; instead, the gradients are created by replacing one thread after another with a thread in a different color (both threads are knotted together, which is hardly noticeable).

Then there is also wool that is dyed and then wound into a bobbel.

So basically there are subtle differences --- and yet the yarns are quite similar - I’d see gradient yarn more as an umbrella term.
