Help: The crochet pattern is unclear

Good morning everyone,

I’ve been crocheting for years, and now this: I just can’t figure out this one crochet pattern :(

Here’s the issue:
Row 24: Skip the last stitch (=51 sc)
Row 25: 3 sl st, sc, skip the last stitch (=47 sc)

So, that’s exactly what I don’t understand. How do I go from 51 stitches to 47 stitches all at once with 3 sl st?? I hope you understand my problem; right now I’m kind of stumped :(

In a case like this, it’s best to contact the author, because they know best what is meant.

I understand it to mean that the slip stitches no longer count in the next round/row, and one stitch is skipped, so that doesn’t count anymore either. 

But since I don’t know what the piece looks like, that’s just a guess :)

Thank you for your quick reply : ) that could certainly be the case, and it also makes sense to skip the sl sts in the next row. Unfortunately, this isn’t a pattern from here, but a very traditional one from a book. I’ll attach a picture of the finished piece here : )

I’m now finished with the bottom part (so up to round 24); now I’m supposed to decrease to get the shape right.

In that case, I’d try writing to the author of the book.

Because of the three slip stitches at the beginning and skipping the last stitch, only 47 sc remain out of the original 51. This creates the curve.

As has already been suggested here, I would also contact the author of the book.
Otherwise, the explanations given here are very plausible, so just try it out and see if it works.
