Modifying Patterns

I’ve noticed that there are pretty strict rules regarding the use of patterns. What if I want to combine two patterns from two different designers? Specifically: I like the little head design on one swaddle blanket, but I think the blanket itself is better in the other pattern. Is that allowed, or do I need to ask the designers for permission?

If you’ve purchased both patterns, you’re certainly free to do so. Everyone can customize their projects to suit their own taste, which is what makes each handmade piece unique.
Of course, it’s a different story if you want to sell your creation—in that case, you’ll need permission from both authors.

Well, as long as you’re crocheting it just for yourself, you can do whatever you want—you don’t have to ask anyone for permission. Just don’t piece together parts of the patterns and then sell it as your own idea.
