You can make all sorts of things with garter stitch.
All you need are knit stitches—on both the right-side and wrong-side rows.

If you’re planning to make a (large or small) blanket, a scarf, or a stole, counting is important.
To avoid having to count every single stitch, it helps to place stitch markers at regular intervals.

To make it easier to keep track of the number of rows as you go up—for example, when knitting sweaters—I pull a thread through every 10th row. That makes it really easy. It looks something like this:

Don’t knit too tightly, or it’ll be a struggle to get the stitches off the needle.

I also quite like the idea with the threads. I wouldn’t have thought of that.
