Dear users, dear authors,
why are animals and amigurumi so popular?
Let me know.

I don’t get it either, but apparently that’s just how it is. I’ll jump on this thread and see what happens!

(P.S.: That’s not to say you’re clueless!)

Amigurumi are usually pretty easy to crochet, and they’re sooo cute! You just can’t resist them—you have to crochet them! And anyone who’s never made one before is sure to admire your work!

@iglinz,
I think it’s because of the “baby schema” effect (big eyes, high forehead, cuddly, soft, etc.), which is irresistible, but I wanted to hear your opinions on that. Feel free to join in. :-)

I think the demand is just so high. If you have kids at home, there’s just no getting around it. And then they have friends who see these little animals and want some too. And those friends have parents—especially the moms—who’d love to have some as well.
And then they start collecting them.
An orange cat, a striped one, a brown one—and now all that’s missing is one in...

In some cases, it’s in their blood—or should I say, hung over the crib as part of a mobile. That’s when it all starts much earlier.

Oh, and even if you don’t have kids, your own needs have to be satisfied, of course. And those of your sister, cousins, and friends.
You can always find someone right away who wants to adopt one of these cute little creatures on the spot.

I’ve always thought amigurumi were cute, but I never really saw the point in crocheting them myself. About 1.5 years ago, I had a miscarriage and was on sick leave for several weeks; I had time on my hands and needed a distraction. So I downloaded a free pattern. It was a monster, and watching it take shape and grow helped me immensely. I ended up making five of them during that time.  My first one sits by my bed; all the others have found new owners.

Since then, I’ve really enjoyed crocheting them because they bring joy to so many people.

@Arni,
it's wonderful that crocheting helped you.
