Crochet hook for a yarn cake?

I tried crocheting with a multi-strand yarn cake, but it really annoyed me that my crochet hook kept splitting the yarn—or rather, that I didn’t have all the strands on the hook. 
Since I think gradient yarns are beautiful and I’ve read how many people love them, there must be an easy way to work with them. Are there special crochet hooks for this? Or a trick for crocheting with these yarns easily?

It’s just a matter of getting used to it. It happens more often at first, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it ;-)

What kind of hooks do you use?

I use the same ones as always—with a little practice, it works just fine :)

Here’s what I imagine: with bamboo hooks, for example, the groove in the hook isn’t always that “deep”…
I mean the groove where you guide the yarn.
I can imagine that makes it harder to work with.

I use the Simfonie crochet hooks from Knit Pro.
I actually really like them because the wood feels so comfortable in my hand.
