Staying Warm in Winter: Which Material?

what materials and techniques work well for staying warm in winter?

definitely something made of virgin wool.
My favorite is a blended yarn, like 50/50—you can wash those easily, too.
Or if you’re looking for something really luxurious, try hand-spun merino. This wool looks great on its own and is really warm and comfortable.

I’m a huge fan of merino wool. It keeps you nice and warm in winter, and lighter merino wool makes for really great shawls that are also perfect for summer.

Merino wool is great and soft. I love it, too :-)

But it gets really warm when you use sheep’s wool from the far north (like Shetland or Icelandic wool) and knit it in two colors using the jacquard or Fair Isle technique. The wool is a bit scratchier, but the fibers felt slightly (that’s intentional) and swell when exposed to humidity, resulting in an incredibly dense knit that can even replace a winter jacket.

And then, of course, there are the fine fibers from animals that live in the very, very cold: yak, camel (Asian camels!), cashmere, and llama (vicuña, alpaca).
