Squares Turn into Diamonds - myboshi Tokashi

I’m new here, and I hope you can help me.
I crocheted the myboshi Tokashi following the pattern, but my squares turned out diamond-shaped.
I’m also having trouble with the rows not lining up properly when I join them. Is this normal, or should there be a straight “seam”? I hope you understand what I mean. 

Aside from the fact that I personally think the diamonds look nicer than the squares: I’m not familiar with the pattern, but it looks like you changed colors one stitch too early in each round. The same likely applies to closing the rounds. That’s why all the straight lines have ended up crooked.

Since it’s a myboshi pattern, I’d advise you to ask them directly.

Otherwise, I think the result looks great.

I actually like your hat just the way it is. But to avoid a misalignment when closing the rounds, it’s a good idea to turn your work after each round.
