So, I just found something really cool—I need to top up my account because I’ve got my eye on something else. But I guess I’m just too dumb—I bought a pattern twice so I could give one away as a gift. I would’ve even bought a third copy, but that’s actually kind of silly since I already have the pattern. ?????????????
Greetings, Klaus
No, that’s not silly—after all, you’re only allowed to use the patterns yourself.
If you want to keep one for yourself AND give one away, you have to buy it again.
I understand you — it really doesn’t seem logical at all to buy the same PDF twice...
Still, I completely agree with ZwergnaseBaer, it’s the right way :)
With digital goods, it’s always a bit awkward; theoretically, you could pass them on as many times as you want... many people think they can do whatever they want with them because they bought them, but that’s not the case.
Imagine this: you pass the pattern on to 4 people, and each of them passes it on to 2 more people...
Then you can be sure that 12 people will no longer buy the pattern.
If you buy a pattern and several people in your household use it, mother and daughter for example, then no one will say anything, not the author, and probably any lawyer would agree with you too...
After all, you wouldn’t buy the same DVD twice for one household either... But once it goes beyond that, it becomes questionable to illegal.
Long story short: you did everything right! I’m glad there are honest customers like you — thank you very much for that.
I’d like to echo the words of the previous posters.
Just a few days ago, I experienced a serious copyright infringement when one of my patterns was illegally uploaded to a WhatsApp group.
As a result, I suffered significant financial loss, as over 200 members there were able to download the pattern without having to buy it.
Passing on patterns can be compared to illegal music downloads. The artist also suffers significant damage as a result....
That makes me all the more happy that there are honest buyers like you out there.
I don’t think that’s stupid at all—I think it’s fair.
After all, someone put a lot of work into this pattern, and the price doesn’t even cover a fair hourly wage.
With that in mind:
Thanks to everyone who’s fair and doesn’t just give away paid patterns for free.
Thanks to all those who show their appreciation for the author of a paid pattern by paying a relatively small amount of money.
Thank you to all those who are willing to give something back in exchange for patterns and help with problems.
Those who simply pass on paid patterns show us authors that we’re foolish to put in the work.
Thank you to all the customers who appreciate our work.
I agree 100% with everyone who’s spoken here so far, and thank you all for your posts.
Klaus, you did everything perfectly. Honesty is becoming increasingly rare these days, especially on the internet. That makes it all the more wonderful to see it here.
All the authors have put a lot of time and effort into developing the product, producing it, and writing the patterns. Before I started writing patterns myself, I could only begin to understand that.
The reward for it is very small in comparison.
I’m also grateful to every honest customer who buys a pattern multiple times to give it as a gift. And every author will be very happy to see this appreciation for their work.
