Become a Yarn Emperor/Empress + stick to a yarn diet

Dear users, dear authors,
Thank you for your active participation in the UFO campaign.
The current campaign is almost over. UFOs can still be submitted until this evening; the next campaign will then run from October 16 to October 22/23.
Anyone who clears out UFOs will become UFO King/Queen, or can keep their title in October as well.

The Yarn Emperor/Empress campaign will run in parallel.
Anyone who wants to reduce their yarn stash can start right away and keep working through it diligently until October 22/23. As a reward, you’ll get the appropriate title and, of course, you can go shopping again. :- )
The Yarn Emperor campaign needs a little more time, so I’m starting it right now. One week is too short for this. Get started using up your yarn. With Christmas coming up, there’s plenty to do in the yarn room anyway.

Good luck.

Who’s joining the Yarn Emperor project?
Please briefly introduce your goals here.

Oh oh oh... there’s no way I can win that title. I just ordered some new supplies... ^^

Hi Josepha,

I think these challenges are great because they really get things done (see all the UFOs that have been finished).
As for the “Use Up Your Yarn Stock” challenge, I’m not quite sure what that means. There’s plenty of yarn I should use up before buying any new.
I’ll just do what I think makes sense. This is the yarn that needs to be used up (a bad buy).

I just quickly decided to crochet something for my kitties out of it—no idea what, but something will surely come of it. Since I have plenty of time, I’ll also write up a pattern for it.
So that’s my plan, and I love it when a plan works out.

Best wishes, Petra

Great, I’m joining right away.

As for the leftover yarn, I’m currently finishing up my second car seat cover for myself using only extra-thick scraps—mostly in shades of blue. I actually ran out of yarn after just a few rows. The first seat cover took more yarn than I thought it would. And since I had so much yarn at home for needle sizes 8–10, that’s how I came up with the idea to use up the leftover yarn.

Hello,

oh great. I’m in.
Hopefully I’ll actually be able to use up a lot of it, or crochet a lot of it up.

My husband is already tearing his hair out whenever he sees yarn ;-)

Best regards, Heike

Just try to use up as much yarn as possible in a sensible, practical, and beautiful way. Then you can sort the remaining stash, catalog it, buy new yarn, etc., etc.
@Petra,
that’s a good idea.
Here on Crazypatterns there is sure to be plenty of inspiration for you.
Let us know what you decide on.

@Pe-Ka,
if you finish the car seat cover by October 23, you can stay UFO Queen and become Wool Empress at the same time.

@Heike,
do you already have project ideas?

@everyone,
which of you is getting yarn as a Christmas gift?
Imagine you get lots and lots of yarn and don’t have any room for it.
That won’t do. :-)
One more reason to join the Wool Emperor/Empress project.

Josefa, I'm getting yarn from southern France as a vacation souvenir. Mohair with silk ... dreamy.......
So, pre-Christmas it is.
Of course I'm joining in too, and I'm sharpening my knitting needles right away. Maybe I'll make it to "almost" yarn queen.

Best regards
Jana

Why “almost”? If you’re going to do it, do it right.
You can do it. Mohair with silk sounds great.

@josefa

Do I have project ideas?

I have so many project ideas that I don’t even know what
to start with first.

So, am I getting this right...if I don’t buy any new yarn by October 23, I’ll get another little crown?!?
Count me in :)
I have plenty of yarn to work through!

I’m so excited about these great challenges!
Thank you so much, dear Josefa!

Oh, and my goals:

- Crochet a batwing sweater from one colorway of my angora-blend yarn; - 1 sweater for my second-youngest made from Turkish wool
- 1 birthday dress (though I need it by Friday) for my second-youngest made from rainbow wool

That should be enough to start reducing my yarn stash :) (and I still need to leave myself some time for the next UFO challenge *laughs*)

@Heike,
Well then, get started. Take it step by step, and you’ll get it all done.

@Nina,
Exactly—finish more projects and one additional UFO by October 23, which will naturally use up a lot of yarn. Then you’ll keep the title of UFO Queen and become the Yarn Empress.
That’s how it works.
Glad you’re enjoying it.

I’ve now had two weeks of vacation behind me. I’ve finished one shawl using about 200 g of yarn. Another one using 100 g is half finished—I ran out of yarn. Two hats are finished. I’ve started a new shawl. And I still have 1200 g of yarn in my suitcase.
In October, I won’t have time to go shopping. I think my chances are good.
Best regards

Dear users, dear designers,
the UFO event from September is over. Now you can dive into the yarn diet (thanks, iglinz) and, with suitably high yarn consumption by October 23, become Yarn Emperor / Yarn Empress.
From October 16 to 22/23, the new UFO project week will take place.

Well, I have tons of projects and yarn (much to my husband’s dismay!). First, I’ll finish crocheting the shark pot holders—that’ll use up three skeins of yarn! For the cat pot holders, I’ll need about three more skeins. I don’t know yet which craft project I’ll be taking with me on my trip, but before that, I’d like to knit myself a hat and some wrist warmers from the leftover sock yarn from the shawl (it can get chilly in Vienna!). The various Christmas gifts I’ve planned will use up even more meters of yarn. We’ll see how far I get with my resolutions…
In any case, I really like the idea!

Unfortunately, I can’t join in.
Whether online or in the store, this yarn always magically draws me in,
and I just can’t resist.
Yesterday, my husband only wanted to quickly get a pineapple, but I ended
up going into the store with him (it was huge), and what can I say...
At the checkout, I had 500 g of yarn in my hand. gggggggggg
My husband just shakes his head and laughs.

Best regards,
Birgit

So, the first sweater is finished, which means I’ve already used up 600 g of yarn. My current project is a little moose, and I’m planning to make a Katniss Cowl next... I’ll keep at it :D

How is the yarn diet / becoming a Yarn Emperor/Empress project going? Do you already have supplies for UFO Week in mid-October?

Hi there!

Things are going well for me!
I’ve finished the following:
- A soul warmer made from 300g/1500m of wool blend
- A baby hat made from leftover yarn (approx. 30g of wool blend
- 3/4 of a hooded jacket for my second-youngest, using ~220g of wool blend

And best of all, I’ve managed to resist buying any new yarn so far!

Made from 200g of rainbow yarn:

A colorful start to fall, so to speak :-)
Nice. It has a bit of a spring-like feel to it.

You guys are so hardworking—it’s making me downright jealous! I’ve only managed to finish a pair of wrist warmers (36g) so far; the shark is still a work in progress, but I’ve got the Bobbelt, needles, and pattern all set aside for the holidays!

I’ll admit it—I’d much rather have started on my mom’s Christmas present.
But since I want the title, I’ll continue working on the second seat cover tonight after all. All that’s left is the backrest and sewing it all together.
So far—since I’m always using three strands of yarn together so it works with the size 10 needle—I’ve already used up 14 small balls of yarn. Now I have a big one that’s been sitting around forever and is a little scratchy. I’ll use that for the backrest.

But there’s still a little time left until October 16.

The “Become UFO King/Queen” project starts on October 16 and doesn’t have to be finished until October 23.
You can do it. The pattern for the car seat cover turned out great—you’ll manage the second cover now, too. No problem at all. :-)

Yes, it’s going well!
I’m working hard to use up my yarn, and I’ve managed to resist the temptation to buy any new yarn :)

I’m not really making much progress with using up my stash: For one thing, I have very little time for crafts, and I mostly make tiny items like bookmarks (birthday gifts!)… In a few days we’re heading to Austria, and I’ve seen that there are a few promising yarn shops in Salzburg! But for now, I’ve resolved to stay strong…

Well, if you want to become wool royalty, you should “limit” yourself to Mozartkugeln and avoid yarn shops. ;)

I’ve set the second sock aside for now and made the second Katniss Cowl yesterday. Today I’ll probably work on the hood for the jacket and maybe the pockets (I don’t like jackets without pockets).

@stjerne61

The yarn you posted above is from TEDI, right? I thought it was quite funny, even if it wasn't suitable for my purposes. What did you make from it?
