Can you recommend anything?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a type of yarn that’s waterproof—meaning that if you knit a swimsuit or bikini out of it, you should be able to go in the water without any worries.
Do you know of anything like that?

Best regards, Petra

Well, I don’t think there’s anything like that. In all the years I’ve been doing needlework, bikinis and similar items have always been just for sunbathing.

Hi Petra,
well, I’m not sure if there’s anything specific out there either. Are you worried about it stretching out when it gets wet?
Best, Caro

Yes, my main concern is that the garment stays where it’s supposed to and doesn’t slip down a few centimeters.
I just read that you might be able to use something with a very high spandex content—what’s available?

I had a look: either synthetic yarn or a natural fiber blend with synthetic content, if the bikini is also meant to be used for swimming.

Also, with almost all the yarns I know of, there’s a risk that the colors will fade.

Maybe it would also make sense to thread elastic cord through all the outer edges. Why not try making a simple pair of panties with synthetic yarn and put it to the test in the shower or bathtub?

@Petra
Cotton—oh dear…
Wool—oh dear…
You could try stretch sock yarn (with a cotton blend). I’d definitely secure it with elastic ;-)

Thank you all for your kind and quick replies. I do have a little time—I won’t need it until next year. Still, it’s something to think about.

I recently read somewhere about a new type of wool… it was called cork wool… it’s supposed to be waterproof and water-repellent… I just can’t remember exactly where…
Best regards, Andreas

Dear Andreas, cork wool, or also Kurkwolle, used to be used for rug knotting.
It may be that this term is now being redefined....

but I found a post explaining how to make wool more water-repellent
