Cones

Dear users, dear authors,
what are cones? Can you knit or crochet directly from the cones, or do you have to wind the yarn again?

Good morning

Strictly speaking, a cone is just the cone onto which the yarn is wound.
But when I say I’ve ordered new cones, I’m actually referring more to the yarn on the cone.

Cone yarn is available in various weights and materials.

The cone yarn I use to wind my gradient yarn cakes can be thought of as a thicker sewing thread.

Since many people crochet tiny amigurumis using sewing thread and a very small crochet hook, it’s safe to assume that this also works with cone yarn. You just need a very fine hook size, good eyesight, and a lot of patience.

My cone yarn is not particularly strong as a single strand, but of course that looks different once it’s worked up, and there are many yarns that aren’t really suitable for tug-of-war in their unworked state but are still great for handicrafts.

My mom wants to knit a very fine jacket and has now ordered two-ply yarn from me for it.
I’m curious to see whether she’ll knit the next one straight from the cone.
