This little vest is perfect for cooler summer days:

Crochet Pattern Baby Traditional Vest

(To purchase/download, please click the image)

Even the littlest ones are dressed smartly in a traditional vest like this. In different colors and with different buttons, the style changes—it's worth trying out.

We need

  • for size 50/56 approx. 125 g,
  • for size 62/68 approx. 150 g,
  • for size 74/80 approx. 200 g,

e.g. Schoeller+Stahl Zimba Top (= 4-ply), 80% wool, 20% polyamide, 50 g – 150 m, needle size according to the label 3.5 – 3.0, crochet hook size 4.0 used here. Gauge according to the label 25 sts x 33 rows = 10 x 10 cm;

plus contrast yarn for the edging and bow: 50 g of 6-ply yarn, e.g. Zimba Medium or another (sock) yarn 50 g – 125 m. Measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends, 2 decorative buttons

These crochet skills are required:
chain stitches, half double crochet, double crochet, front post double crochet, back post double crochet, slip stitches, crocheting in rows. Post double crochets are explained.

Baby traditional knit vest size 86/92 with intarsia cable

(To purchase/download, please click the image)

Not just for Oktoberfest season...

For this special sleeveless baby vest without buttons, we need:

150 g merino wool in gray + 50 g merino wool in red, here Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 120, 50 g – 120 m yardage, gauge according to the label: 22 sts x 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm, knitting needles 3.0 – 4.0; here: knitting needles 4.0, cable needle, crochet hook 3.5 for the bow, stitch holder or similar for holding stitches, yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker is helpful.

The PDF pattern is illustrated.

The red cable on the back is worked in intarsia technique (illustrated explanation is included) and requires some time and skill - so I would not recommend it for beginner knitters. The cable also looks lovely in solid gray, and then the whole piece is knitted up quite quickly. For beginner knitters, I therefore recommend knitting this vest completely without the cable and/or in one color .

Babies naturally need lots of things in summer too. Here I’d like to show you a few of my patterns from my shop:

These baby rattles are a wonderful toy. They are nice and soft and help develop babies’ coordination and urge to move, since they make sounds when moved. The crochet pattern includes all three rattles: knight, princess, and pirate. The rattles are also great for using up leftover yarn and, of course, also make a lovely baby shower or newborn gift.
For the pattern and more information about materials and yarn, go here: Crochet Pattern - Knight Rattle - Princess Rattle - Pirate Rattle

Babies need a lot of warmth, and the body loses a lot of heat through the head in particular. That’s why babies always need a hat in the first months of life. This baby hat is not only quick to crochet, but also very practical with its earflaps, as they keep the ears nice and warm too. You can also crochet the hat to suit the season by using either warm winter yarn or lighter summer yarn.

The “Marie” baby blanket is a great companion in the first months and years of life. It is cuddly soft, keeps babies nice and warm, and can still be used for toddlers too. It is crocheted a little larger (80 x 100 cm), so you can simply fold it double to cover babies at first and later use it single for toddlers. It is also a great blanket for covering children and babies in the car.

I have 2 baby sleeping bags with matching little hats for you. I find sleeping bags especially practical for summer, as they replace a blanket and the baby can’t kick them off.

Which do you prefer, knitted or crocheted?

  • Yardage 125 m / 50 g
The stitch types:
Knitting:
  • cast on stitches / bind off
  • knit and purl stitches
Crochet:
  • single crochet and extended single crochet
  • decrease / crochet together
