CE mark

Hello, fellow craft lovers!

I have a question about the crocheted items offered for sale here:

So far, I haven’t dealt with the “CE mark,” but I’ve heard it’s required.

Can you help me out—how do you handle this, and how and where can I get it?
I’ve already asked this question on the freeminute forum. There, someone on CP suggested that I ask the question here.

Warm crochet greetings from Handarbeitsbäumchen Marlies

Hello,
There’s a Facebook group for this:

“CE Kennzeichen - Mein Häkeltier möchte ein Zeichen setzen”

Best regards, Sabine

The CE mark is required throughout Europe for children’s toys, so by law, no toys may be sold that do not comply with the EN 71 standard. In the group, you’ll find lots of tips and assistance from the members.
The testing and documentation aren’t exactly easy, of course, but once you’ve worked your way through the documents, it’s doable. Everyone has to decide for themselves, of course, whether the effort is worth it.

Hi Sabine, hi Natalia,

thank you very much for your help.

Warm regards, Marlies

P.S. So I’m assuming that my products, which are intended for decoration and aren’t suitable for children—as noted under each item—don’t need this CE mark?

Hi Marlies,

Unfortunately, yes. It used to be possible to classify them as “decorations,” but that’s no longer the case. Anything that’s softly stuffed and could be perceived by a child as a toy must comply with CE guidelines. This includes all amigurumi, from small keychains to large teddy bears.

I myself stopped selling my amigurumis for exactly this reason and switched to writing patterns. To be able to produce my items in a CE-compliant manner, I would have had to make too many compromises in terms of creativity, materials, and possibilities—and I wasn’t willing to do that. Ultimately, it’s also a financial issue, since you might need completely new materials, have to be able to conduct various tests, etc. The decision wasn’t an easy one, but looking back, it was the only practical solution for me so I wouldn’t have to give up on the subject entirely. I certainly don’t regret it, though.

I’d also highly recommend the group that Sabine suggested above. You’ll find all the information you need there to help you out.

Warm regards,
Christine

As Christine already wrote, you can’t make it that easy for yourself by calling them “decorative items” — I’ve looked at your items, and you definitely need the CE mark if you want to continue selling them.
I spent a very long time dealing with this topic, which is why I now write my patterns for baby comfort blankets using CE-compliant Mondial Bio Soft Cotton yarn. By now, the CE marking no longer seems all that difficult to me; the hardest part is actually getting access to the standards, which are quite expensive at around 300 euros. If you have access to a university of applied sciences library, you can also consult the standards there, but copies are not allowed.
If you still have any questions, I’d be happy to help.

Hi Marlies,

I just read the chat about the CE mark. I’d be very interested to know how you proceeded back then. Did you have your items tested, or did you stop selling them? I’m currently facing the same hurdle...
Best regards, Kalinka
