I would definitely recommend starting with smaller, easy projects. That way, you’ll quickly experience a sense of accomplishment, which is motivating! :)

Yes, and it should be something you yourself will enjoy.
I’d suggest a simple cowl with lots of chain stitches. It’s quick and easy to crochet and looks great. It’s best to use gradient yarn—then it won’t get boring even if the stitch pattern keeps repeating.

When I started crocheting a few years ago, my first project was a scarf *laughs*. Just like it probably was for many of you!
I stuck with it and was really proud of myself :)

Choose a project that excites you—that way, you’ll be sure to see it through to the end! Don’t lose patience and keep at it! It’s definitely worth it :)

The Knobblys are a great project for newcomers and beginners. They're quick to crochet, instantly put you in a good mood, and you only need a little yarn.

Don’t be afraid—just give it a try. That’s my tip. If you’ve never crocheted before and don’t know anyone who could show you how, get a book that explains how to do the different stitches, or check out tutorials online, and then make something you really want to make. If that’s a pot holder, then make a pot holder, and if it’s a sweater, then make a sweater. Go for it!

I also think amigurumi are a great way to get started. My first crochet project was a unicorn. I’d never crocheted before, but thanks to Aunt Google and Uncle YouTube, it turned out great :)

I actually started out (as a kid) making doll clothes. Seeing quick results was motivating, and the fit didn’t have to be 100% perfect. Today, I’d definitely start with a loop scarf, too.

But there’s one thing I always think is important: buy yourself some nice, good-quality yarn. That’s half the fun. Sure, you can also start with leftover yarn that Aunt Hedwig gave you, but you’ll quickly lose interest if the color and quality don’t really inspire you.

If you’re crocheting in the round for the first time, be sure to mark the beginning.
This is especially important when working single crochet stitches.

It’s also better to avoid dark colors and use lighter, perhaps more vibrant colors instead.
With dark colors, it’s harder to see where to insert the hook.

Back in school, the first crochet project was a potholder with a chain foundation, and then just crocheting straight up in single crochet. If you managed to keep it nice and straight and ended up with the same number of stitches as you started with, you got top marks.

If you can do that, you can try your hand at other projects too.

Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t look great at first! If you’re still struggling with scarves or infinity scarves, you might want to try using a larger hook—it makes crocheting easier and looser.
