Which quotes or words of wisdom do you particularly like?

Hi there,

I’m a big fan of quotes and words of wisdom. There’s often some truth to them.
As a little girl growing up in the Swabian countryside, I had a sweet grandma as a neighbor who loved to sell little candies to the kids.
We called her Grandma Schreiber, a sweet Swabian grandma who always had something nice to say.
There was a saying hanging on the wall: “When you think you can’t go on, a little light will come from somewhere.” It was illustrated with a candle and a book.
It’s always stayed with me throughout my life ;-).

I came away from my studies with a quote that has shaped my attitude toward many things. Sometimes it gives me or my friends courage, but I also see this quote as a warning.

“Normality is a paved road. You can walk on it—but no flowers grow there!”
(van Gogh)

I always enjoyed writing this in a poetry album:

"Love a mother's heart as long as it beats, because once it is broken, it is too late"

Still one of my favorite quotes today.
It probably isn't known who this comes from,
but that person was very wise, in my opinion.

I had a music teacher who was also the principal of my elementary school.
Back then, there was still the lovely tradition of friendship books, and teachers were welcome to write in them too.
This music teacher wrote a saying that was always my favorite in that book:

“There is nothing good unless you do it.”

Another saying that I often use myself comes from Bavaria and goes:

“And no matter how steep the mountain, you can always manage a little something.”

But my absolute favorite saying is the quote from old Winston Churchill: “No Sports.” ;-))

My favorite quote is: “Everyone should find happiness in their own way.”

Oh yes, from old Fritz. And he was so right....

I forgot the “not”…

Mine is: *fortuna favet fortibus* = fortune favors the brave :)

I feel the same way as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential remains invisible to the eye.”

One of my favorite sayings: “No road is long with a friend by your side” (Rainer Maria Rilke)

“Beautiful words aren’t always true, and true words aren’t always beautiful.”
And:
“You don’t become a better person by putting others down.”

The saying that probably means the most to me is this one by Thomas Campbell: “To live in the hearts we leave behind means not to die” (unfortunately in English—sorry)

But I can be more cheerful, too. Something I really love: “An optimist doesn’t stand in the rain—he takes a shower under a cloud” :-) I don’t know who said it, though.

My favorite saying has always been: “First weigh and dare, then think and speak!”

And a true saying my mother is fond of using: “Everyone is only burdened with what they can still bear.”

I think this is fitting for us designers:
“Use the talents you have. The forests would be very quiet if only the most talented birds sang.”

No, luckily I haven’t. But I wouldn’t have thought they’d be so strict about that, either. 

To be honest, I also think it’s pretty stupid…

I mean… We’re talking about QUOTES. Some of them are just short sentences… The chances of someone happening to come out with the same clever saying aren’t exactly small… And then you might end up with a cease-and-desist letter…

I think I’ll knock out a few clever sayings too and then sue people who say the same thing ;)

I’ll do that right after I’ve had some terms trademarked (see the Black Friday thread)

Then I can also come up with a lovely saying that’s definitely no longer protected by copyright, since it’s over 70 years old:

“Happy are those who forget what can no longer be changed.”

;-)))

"Pleasing everyone is an art no one can master".
This saying (derived from the Bible, "No one can serve two masters..." and therefore a bit older than 70 years...) is something I sometimes have to remind myself of when I’d still really like to be able to do just that—grin
